Instructional Updates

PD Day tomorrow. Presenting budget updates to staff. RTI update on interoceptors and gestalt language processors. In the afternoon there will be a big data dive into NWEA data. Looking at school wide data, then giving classroom packets. Using that data plus skills/transition checklist to create a benchmarking assessment to support 3rd and 6th graders over the next six months. Going forward will meet every two weeks to assess/revisit progress. Specifically around math.

Coaching themes:  creating agendas for conferences with key students. Next week is observation; the following week is conferences.

Amy shared data from NWEA Map study focusing on charter schools. Nationally, students are behind in math. estimates students need 4 mos to get on track for reading, 4.2 months to get on track for math.

optimizing for time: how do you look at schedule and find sublemental learning time to allow students and being dynamic during classroom time.

pushing more content: not just linearly teaching to standards; content that you can scaffold and build

returning to foundational skills: having dedicated practice time for skills

opportunity for self directed learning; each student having an individual learning plan, using student discourse as a form of student assessment.

Attendance: no updated data, but wanted to do a brief update on SARC team, which meets monthly. Team has started to meet with families around attendance to identify needs and challenges that families have to getting to school. Initial response from families has been that they feel very supported. Looking at ways to make that info available to all. Barriers have been outside of school: ie, healthcare.

III. Other Items for Review

A.

2024 - 2025 School Calendar

OUSD is estimated to start on August 8th; we are looking at starting on Aug 14th to accommodate (almost) 10 days of PD prior to start of school. Extra day of PD has been added on Nov 1st.

OUSD is moving Indigenous people day away from Columbus day; we have not done this.

Last day of school is Jun 4.

Expected to vote on it at next week's board meeting.

B.

Measure G1 - Community Engagement

Measure G1 is a bond measure that helps fund very specific things for Oakland middle school students. Last year we used that money to support director of student services since they provide direct support to that population. Ideally we would like to use that for the same thing this year.

Right now OUSD has the wrong data so thinks we have fewer middle school students; if they can't correct that error, it will not be worth the amount of time (application, board meeting, site visit) needed to access the funds.

IV. Closing Items

A.

Topics for next meeting

NWEA data and the plan developed around it.

Percentage of families that participated in conferences.

Policy review.

B.

Adjourn Meeting

There being no further business to be transacted, and upon motion duly made, seconded and approved, the meeting was adjourned at 3:57 PM.

Respectfully Submitted,
K. Fortuna
