Mark Roberts Board Secretary I graduated with a B.S. in Social Studies Ed. and a minor in Public Speaking. I taught for 3 years straight out of school and learned quickly that with a teacher’s salary I could not support a family. I left education and ended up going to law school for a year and then into business. By a fluke, a friend of mine from school got an interview for me with Graco Children’s Products in Pennsylvania and they hired me. I worked for them for over 5 years in Transportation/Logistics and Purchasing. One of those five years, I spent in Taiwan managing a buying office of 24 Taiwanese and oversaw the production of Graco’s strollers in Asa. I spent nearly 20 more years with 3 other companies in the areas of Sourcing, Purchasing and Supply Chain Logistics - working in Pennsylvania, Charlotte, Connecticut, LA and with the last 3 or so working in NYC. I spent a fair amount of time traveling domestically and internationally with most of my trips to Asia, Europe and Central America. I got tired of the corporate life and the 4 hour daily commute into Manhattan in 2007. I wanted something more fulfilling than a decent salary - specifically, I wanted to make a difference. In early 2008 I decided to quit my job at MovieStar, an apparel company based in Manhattan. My plan was to leave MovieSar during the early summer of 2008 and move south where I had family and had teaching credentials(25 years earlier). I hoped to secure a teaching position in Greenville that fall. We moved to Greenville, SC the summer of 2008. A principal of a Charter school that I met through a friend took a chance on hiring me without any certification or recent experience in the classroom. It had been 25 years since I had last taught, so he helped me get certified and showed me how a good school is managed - this charter school was one of the best in the state. He was a wonderful leader, a great mentor and really took an interest in getting me into education. The job was amazing and I taught there for 5 years, but we decided to follow our daughter to Charleston where she would be running cross country for the Citadel. I had no luck finding a job in a charter school in Charleston, in spite of many connections, there just were NOT any openings. I decided to make a change and accepted a position with a small private school that was just getting started. I am now in my 10th year teaching and coaching at Crown Leadership Academy. It has easily been the best 10 years of my life. I have also stayed involved with Public Charter schools including assisting in the launching of a couple of other charter schools as well as serving on the board of another charter school.
