Personnel & Hiring

Discussed these hiring position posting descriptions:

ERA Job Descriptions:

3 Teacher Job Descriptions: MS Math, MS ELA, MS SS

Director of Academics Job Description

PT Director of Communication Job Description

Question: Director of Academics - could we grow this position to help support curriculum for different ages.

Qualifications - Masters degree in education or higher (add or higher)

  • Having more expectations for their background - aspirationally demonstrate working with large data, conceptualization, how they’ll use and filter in all the data we have
  • data analysis, data visualization, predictive analytics
  • Have this person have background with curriculum - could they also be a person that keeps an eye on STREAM, working with principals about what that means from execution, streamline K-12
  • Fidelity with STREAM model, promoting and supporting research-based curricular innovation - i.e. alpha school, none of outcomes are independently verified, they screen students out before they come, no IEPs - there is a danger in the really big hype for curricular innovation, that is NOT research based. Ability to read research
  • Notes:Data, trends, MTSS through smart lunch, gen ed counterpart to EC Director, helping us being accountable to all of the things

C.

Rubric for ERA STREAM Roadmap

Discussion from other schools:

  • Megan/Kristin:
    • Durham School of the Arts - didn’t have much on the website about curriculum and metrics - they didn’t respond
    • Science and Math - did reach back, understanding how they developed performance and metrics, they gave a lot about research - really interesting and thoughtful approach
      • You are going to have to go really slow.
      • Suggestion was to have a 3 year plan
        • Next year, all we do is collect information about exactly what we are already doing. What is already happening that hits STREAM goals
          • Early release days - staff meeting and then show me exactly what you’ve done in the last 4 weeks of school that has hit these STREAM components
        • The following year - how do we make this project include more collaboration
      • Summer capstone project for juniors and seniors (music and math teacher one summer etc.)
      • Bringing in experts on some of those afternoons to help model to the teachers to get the buy in
    • https://finearts.ncssm.edu/ - Scott Laird and Carrie Alter may be helpful to talk with: http://www.scottlaird.net/Educationalsessions.html and Bec Conrad runs the Fab Lab, is a former museum exhibit designer and concept car creator.  Also - just generally ask about their J-Term options. The problem is summer is that contracts are not 12 months. It would need to be an additional contract for summer programming. Summer camps for older students.
    • School current does have the physical structure and materials to support this stuff
      • If you want tech and arts together you have to have a space for that.
      • Summer camps I wonder if one of the first sessions with teachers is to put together a STREAM vision statement with examples of resources needed that reflects ERA and then we work to map the classes within that STREAM vision.

See the STREAM Roadmap

Next meeting: start with the end in mind - portrait of a graduate.

Notes from last meeting:

We should be leading creating our own resources and helping other schools become like us, we should not be conforming to other definitions of distinction

  • Presenting at NC Conferences
  • Let’s be us fully and then share that back
  • Creating own rubric that includes Research and the Arts

Important for having metrics - looking for indicators around R and A. For the next several meetings

DSA, TMS
