Financial Transparency: CEO Hulet noted that any purchases over $25,000 within her authority have been fully reported out and approved, aligned with the original budget or sub-grant sheets.
ACT Results: Initial ACT results were received from the College Board. A week after posting, the College Board indicated adjustments would be made, which are expected to shift scores higher rather than lower. Final results are expected around June 5th or 6th.
Staff Appreciation: The end-of-the-year staff appreciation drawing featured over $15,000 in donated prizes (gift cards, credits, dinners, show/speedway tickets)—marking a $5,500 increase over last year.
Cowabunga Canyon Event: The school purchased a full park sell-out for families. Ticket and cabana sales were successful enough to cover costs and yield a $10,000 profit, which will help fund staff appreciation and graduation gifts.
Archer of the Year Assemblies: Successful assemblies were held at Rainbow Elementary, Durango Elementary, and Durango Secondary to honor outstanding students and staff.
10-Year Employee Recognition: Seven employees (Megan Wheeler, Jackie Jackson, Stacy Gibson, Vanessa Conti, Max Haigler, and Adry Kewish) were recognized for 10 years of service and awarded a loyalty bonus alongside a lighted glass trophy.
Graduation Success: The graduation ceremony had nearly 1,000 attendees and celebrated a 100% graduation rate for 156 graduates. This was a major achievement, as 40 of those students were not on track to graduate at mid-year.
Valedictorian & Salutatorian: The valedictorian finished with a 5.70 GPA, and the salutatorian finished with a 5.607 GPA.
No questions were asked
VIII. New Business (Discussion and possible action)
A.
Review, discuss and approve FY27 Final Budget
The initial budget was originally adopted during the March 25th meeting. The updated final budget features very minimal changes from the March version. Key updates include the incorporation of a K-3 STEM pilot grant (with matching revenues and expenses to offset) and minor adjustments to the general and special education fund transfers. The projected end-of-year fund balance sits at $11.7 million, with a healthy debt service coverage ratio of 1.29, which accounts for anticipated new debt service costs.
M. St Jean asked if the school currently has a designated grant writer/seeker.
CEO Hulet responded that Becca currently serves as the compliance and grant coordinator, managing incoming state and federal grants (typically from SPCSA or NDE). She noted they do not currently have someone dedicated to pursuing outside private grants, but suggested it could be a good board committee to form. She also highlighted that during the pandemic transition, a lot of relief money was readily available, but those relief funds have now dried up, returning them to standard grant offerings.
B.
To review, discuss, and potentially approve to delegate the final decision-making authority regarding suspensions and expulsions to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
This item was introduced to officially update and close out documentation regarding the student suspension and expulsion process. While the school's annually approved discipline policy already outlines a strict due process and designates the executive leader with final approval authority, legal counsel recommended a formal board delegation. To ensure the process is entirely legally clean and to prevent potential loopholes where parents could argue due process wasn't tightly followed, the attorney advised that the board explicitly vote to delegate this power to the CEO position within the public meeting minutes.
Questions:
C Farthing asked for confirmation that families are explicitly made aware of the expulsion plan and what their options are if they want to appeal.
CEO Hulet confirmed that they are given clear guidelines and timelines. Families have exactly 5 school days from receiving the final result to submit an appeal to the board. They are provided direct contact information for Nav and Becca to ensure the board receives the appeal promptly.
D Price asked if the process also goes through a committee first.
CEO Hulet clarified that on the initial side, a committee conducts the actual hearing. The principal makes a recommendation to the committee, and the committee decides whether to uphold or reject that recommendation before it moves forward.
