The Pullman Public Schools Board of Directors hosted a Community Listening Session focused on what students need from their education today and what they should be prepared for when they graduate.
Assistant Superintendent Ryan Mulvey provided an overview the FutureReady Proposal highlighting major changes to the current proposed requirement framework which included the change from 17 core credits to 15, implementation of personalized pathway requirements, and continued elective requirements to ultimately give student's more choice in how they meet their requirements.
Themes from the community listening session regarding student preparation for future goals and proposed changes to state graduation requirements highlighted the importance of balancing student choice and personalized pathways with a well-rounded education that provides opportunities to explore new interests, including career and technical education (CTE), arts, and hands-on learning. Participants emphasized keeping postsecondary options open for students while developing transferable skills such as creative problem-solving, collaboration, communication, and accountability. Discussion also focused on potential impacts to course offerings, staffing, curriculum, and teacher preparation, as well as opportunities to incorporate practical applications and innovative instructional approaches across subject areas. Additional themes included the role of student interests in engagement and attendance, the importance of early career exploration, and the need to provide early support and equitable opportunities for students.
