II. Academic Excellence
A.
High School Bell Schedule
Greg:
- Nervous about 4 90 minute periods. What does engagement look like?
- Transition time periods should remain as is
- 90 minute block is ideal
- Does require plenty of prep time - this is why she had to reduce her load to part time
- When teachers not prepared they fill with "empty tasks" like Khan, which doesn't often work
- 90 minutes is ideal
- Should we vary length between 90 and 60 minutes; how about rotating periods?
- What are the best times of day to do certain activities
- Should we reduce # of classses?
- Have rotating class periods 1-->2-->3-->4-->1
- Have clocks in hallways
B.
2019-20 Master Schedule: High School course offerings
Daren:
- Feedback he hears is Public Speakng is very difficult to teach and maintain engagement in part because the content can literally be anything
- Implement more Project Based Learning opportunities between classes
- We should add a business/personal finance/accounting class
- Many students are interested in business
- We need more Art opportunities - film, music,
- Students need opportunity to express themselves
- Son has Western Civ class that interweaves: Art, Music, and History history
- Move away from SAT prep class
- Low buy-in
- Students are not receiving offer letters to cover expenses
- whole idea of Ceiba is for all of our students to graduate from college
- Is open to getting creative with how SAT prep is implemented
- We should think about doubling up on core content area classes - ELA, Math, Science
- Elective "support" really does not support
- Repeatedly see a lack of literacy/fluency in subject areas
- By doubling classes we may see improved test scores, better offer letters, high graduation rates
- What kind of data tools is Ceiba using? NWEA MAP? Accelerated Reader?
