Call the Meeting to Order

M. Rosenthal called a meeting of the board of trustees of Inwood Academy for Leadership Charter School to order on Saturday Mar 23, 2024 at 9:21 AM.

Approve Minutes

K. Smith made a motion to approve the minutes from February Board of Trustees Meeting on 02-13-24.
S. Mlynar seconded the motion.
The board VOTED to approve the motion.

II. Board Committee Reports

A.

Mid-Year Goal Check In

 

Elementary School Updates:

  • Renderings were shared with the board 
  • Draft Lease has been released for final review by attorney

Marketing Updates: 

  • IAL has 3 IAL ambassadors handing out marketing flyers everywhere throughout all of Inwood and neighboring communities. 
  • IAL also has a commercial on Telemundo running daily 

Goal Dashboard- Mid Year Check in 

  • Focused on academics and culture goals
  • Culture Goals- Attendance 
    • Increase attendance rate by 2% to 92% by June 2024:
      • Rewarding attendance with positive incentives 
      • Conducting home visits and implementing plans for attendance intervention 
      • IAl is doing better in both MS and HS
        • The HS is always a bit lower; usually due to the upper classmen responsibilities needed for graduation 
      • The board made a suggestion of possibly partnering with an online school to help IAL out with attendance rate
  • Culture goals- Suspensions 
    • Decrease suspensions by 5% by June 2024
      • Vaping has become a nationwide issue; resulting in a few more suspensions than years prior
    • IAl has been doing targeted interventions for students with more than 1 suspension 
      • IAL will Increase mental health services, including Astor, Rise, Inwood Community Services, Talk Space etc.
  • Academic goals- MS ELA Scores- iReady Reading 
    • 39% of 5th through 8th students will score proficient or above on the ELA State Exam
      • IAL uses iReady for these assessments and have increased the ELA instructional time
        • Assessments are given at the beginning of the year (BOY), middle of the year (MOY) , and end of school year (EOY)
      • The school-wide vocabulary initiative offering professional development for teachers on delivering targeted vocabulary instructions will help drive thus effort to fruition. 
      • Personalized student goal setting using iReady 
  • Academic goals- MS ELA Scores- Interim (internal/IAL test)
    • 39% of 5th through 8th students will score proficient or above on the ELA State Exam
      • The W&W curriculum standardizes questions sets for each module to enable data collection and progress monitoring on individual standards 
        • Helps with targeted interventions
      • Saturday school sessions focused on targeted interventions and state exam prep are being offered to Middle Schoolers  

Academic goals- MS Math Scores- iReady Math

  • By the end of June 2024, 45% of 5th through 7th grade MS Students will score proficient or above on the Math State Exam. (5% increase)
    • This is the right and best number/percentage for IAl to works towards
    • IAL is doing:
      • During weekly math madness, students engaged in spiraled math skill practice while teachers oversee and track their advancement.
      • Also, personalized student goal setting 

Academic goals- MS Math Scores- Interim

  • By the end of June 2024, 45% of 5th through 7th grade Middle School Students will score proficient or above on the Math State Exam. (5% increase)
    • Teachers participate in professional learning communities to analyze weekly math practice question sets, engage in an inquiry cycle, and further strategize interventions that will best benefit the student(s) in need.  
    • Saturday school sessions focused on targeted interventions & state exam prep

The board can and will make recommendations for professional development ideas to the Executive Leadership Team to further expand the development of IAL instructional team members. 

 

Academic Goals- Algebra Scores (these are Mock regents)

  • By the end of August 2024, 70% students enrolled in Algebra will achieve a passing score in Algebra 1 Regents. 
    • IAL intends to:
      • Add additional intervention support in HS Algebra classes
      • Offer Regents prep after school at HS and Saturday academy at the MS 

HS ELA Scores 

  • By the end of August 2024, 65% of students taking the English regents will achieve a passing score.
    • The schoolwide vocabulary initiative emphasizes offering Professional Development for teachers for better testing preparation strategies. 

Graduation Rates

  • By August 2024, 91% of students will graduate 
    • Absenteeism is the highest contributor to students who are off-track for graduation 
    • We have expanded credit recovery and regents exam prep
    • Students who are on track for graduation are higher than our 2023 Cohort
