K. Shaw called a meeting of the Outreach: Families and Community Committee of Elgin Math & Science Academy to order on Thursday Jan 7, 2021 at 5:34 PM.

II. Data, Dates and Deadlines

A.

Goals of the Outreach Committee

We have specific diversity goals.
School Mint numbers today:
  • We have 133 applications currently.
  • 38 applicants for Kindergarten
    • Typically have 100+ on waitlist
    • 5 of whom are sibling
  • We had 401 total applications last year
    • Private school closed which boosted #s
  • Year before 370 applications
  • 4th grade is the low point (only 10 on waitlist) --only 6 applications
Sarah attended 4 food pantry outreach events this year--collected emails
Equity-focused outreach

What are our goals and by when:  
  • 150 Kindergarten by March 1
  • 30 at each grade 1-6  = 180 total
D.F.  Are there institutional locations that could help?
    Per LF, move up intent to enroll and off waitlist

Preschools (SS):
    Summit School (Linda)--shares out
    EPEL--Retweets
    Two Rivers--Sarah talk to Brigitte
DF:
    Consolidated talking points
    Relationship building
    Site visits to preschools
    Campus is strong selling point
    Centers--any parent connections to help recruit?
BL:
    April/May sign up folks out front of preschools
    Folks will want to have conversations
DF:
    30 min weekly mtgs for potential families--ongoing forum
    Still will be an access challenge

This committee will convene on Tuesday at 5:30 pm to review and approve.

 

III. 2021 Applications and FRL

A.

David Feinberg

31% directly certified FRL
FRL currently around 44%
50% families have completed application
Applications/Forms don't come out until July 1
Applications can be completed online through Titan
July/August is when fees are paid

GOALS: 
51% FRL by March 1 
60% determined (application filled out) by March 1
75% determined by Sept 1 

Incentives/Ideas
Could immediately improve E-Rate, March 1 
Incentives have been discussed--these will be budget-dependent
Discount on registration fees for anyone who fills out application for next year: $10-$20 to start.
EPTC meeting: can be advanced there 
T-shirts/uniform incentives
Comfort level for repeated requests.
Need phone call follow-ups.

DF:
    Will create recommendations and action plan
    Committee to review on Tuesday
    Dan, Lezlie, others to look at budget

Eviction moratorium ends in January.  Community resource piece prepared by Sarah.
