Call the Meeting to Order

A. Weimar called a meeting of the Academic Excellence Committee of Shining Rock Classical Academy to order on Thursday May 9, 2024 at 3:41 PM.

Approve Minutes

K. White made a motion to approve the minutes from Academic Excellence Committee Meeting on 04-18-24.
S. Jenkins seconded the motion.
The committee VOTED unanimously to approve the motion.

Standards-Based Grading

Update on SBG subcommittee following presentation to board members on April 24, 2024

 

Presentation to the board - Q/A with the board. 

 

Board requests a proposal by August meeting. 
 

J.Sessom - recommends pilot programs. 

 

B.

Academic Committee Items for Policy Committee Review

The following academic policies were approved by the BOD:

 

  • Dual enrollment - policy 5440
  • Graduation requirements - policy 5550
  • Academic grading - policy 460

III. New Business

A.

Economics and Personal Finance

Karina Huber - Economic and personal finance course for HS per NCDPI standards. 

 

This past semester was the first 

The state provides some lesson plans which need to be reviewed and adapted. Some concerns with the pre-designed lesson plans - illogical flow, errors, inconsistent, all digital (multiple copies), 

 

Dave Ramsey Personal Finance Program for students - interest in this program. 

Estimated costs - $1320.73 - first year and includes teacher kit and training; $24 per book. 

Weimar - concerned about religious undertones. We need to order a desk copy and review this curriculum. 

 

Sessoms- NC virtual public school has an online Economics course we need to review. 

 

White - let's look at both (Ramsey and virtual public school). 

 

Action items - 

Sessoms - will investigate NC virtual public school  options 

Hubar- Will order desk copy of Personal Finance book 

 

 

 

B.

AI Integration

AI: Regional consortium at Lake J last week (4/30). 

Jenkins, C White, and Schliefer attended. 

 

AI is here. We must support the healthy use of AI and practices. 

 

This will need to be addressed in the policy. 

 

An AI committee is needed to address AI. Tool to be used responsibly.
