Call the Meeting to Order

A. Allen-Thames called a meeting of the Academic Excellence Committee of Sankofa Montessori to order on Wednesday Oct 23, 2024 at 7:17 PM.

Approve Minutes

E. Moore made a motion to approve the minutes from Academic Committee Meeting on 09-11-24.
A. Allen-Thames seconded the motion.
The committee VOTED to approve the motion.

Leadership Team Updates

Leadership team featured updates via PowerPoint Presentation.  The following notes are a synopsis of the slides.

  • SCSC Metrics for Sankofa- Set Academic goals for 2027 – Sarah reinstated the School Wide Goals for 2024-2025 school year (Attendance, Reading, Reading and Math, Social/Emotional) 
  • Staff Updates:  24 flight crew members from Sept; 9FC/6co-C/4 staff/5 FC/1 recruitment contractor for Jazmin (19 hrs); Pat leave coverage for manager of discipline and culture for 6 wks (Rhushanda); 1:1 SPED Para.  Mr. Colin (K)-transitioned off team, alerted parents, last day before fall break with 2 town halls.  3 interview candidates and used contracting agency, offer today for K teacher to start next week.  Added part-time teaching asst. Added Americorps teammate and Added part time teaching asst.   Ms. Assata will transition off Dec. 31 and agreed to consult in new year (ADOO) Still hiring for contracted ESOL teacher (lack of certification) and contracted gifted teacher and ADOO for Assata's replacement. 
  • Absences (15 for flight captains, dec in co-captains, 6 for flight support, 7 for flight control;  increase in absences result of planned absences in calendar).  Into October, quite a # of absences due to sickness running through the school.   
  • Culture data:  Out of school suspensions- #’s are down, Class Dojo {K-0, 1st-6, 2nd-1, 3rd-1}.  October just one cultural referral a day, but in past multiple.  Implementing SCSC Harmony curriculum about harmony and respecting boundaries.  Reasons for suspension: decrease significantly for physical assault and combination of (elopement) 
  • SPED:  See section below. 
  • Enrollment and Recruitment: 144 enrollment and recruitment;  11 withdrawals in September
  • Student attendance: 1% increase overall in attendance by daily average; working of earning field experience for grade. Grading for accuracy; Failing students, teachers in communications with families.  Goal is 100% of students passing.  1 family withdrew whose K student was failing.   
  • Update on new curriculum/class schedule status:  Kids acclimating fine and seamless now.  Teachers and classrooms going better.    
  • Miscellaneous: Next meeting draft of 2025-2026 calendar for approval before winter break; community handbook edits.  Applications open Nov. 1

Special Education

SPED:  24 IEPs secondary to 3 withdrawals  Additional kids with diagnoses (9 kids with new diagnosis); dec of MTSS by 6 from last month.  Increase of # of immediate consideration of SPED.

 

Current teacher, Ms. Samantha in process of SPED certificate.

Gifted Student Services

As noted above, recruiting for a contracted gifted teacher.
