One City Schools has a strong foundation of active and engaged parents. Parent representatives who serve on One City's Board of Directors will have the opportunity to share an update with the Board on behalf of the One City parent-led Parent Council. 

 

Parent Board Members Ms. Toya Pedracine-Stewart, Dr. Wajiha Akhtar-Khaleel and Ms. Jodie Pope will present/lead the discussion, which will include Board members responses to their question around what specific information non-parent Board members would like to hear from them each month.
 
III. Guest Presentation - Sara Alvarado, of The Alvarado Group and OWN IT: Building Black Wealth 4:19 PM
 
Sara Alvarado, Co-Owner/Founder of The Alvarado Group and Co-founder of OWN IT: Building Black Wealth will provide details of the OWN IT: BBW program that One City is piloting.

Sara Alvarado will speak to the Board about the OWN IT: BBW program. The program is designed to educate and provide connections and resources to families and staff of One City. The program aims to remove barriers to homeownership and to building wealth through homeownership. Following the education period, community resources will continue to be available to program participants, along with the opportunity to apply for funds in the amount of $15,000 per family toward the purchase of a home. 

Sara has pulled together an outstanding team of individuals and organizations devoted to creating change. One City is proud to have been selected as the pilot organization.

Leah Lange of Numbers 4 Nonprofits has prepared One City's May 2021 financial statements.

One City Treasurer and Finance Committee Chair, Torrey Jaeckle will present the statements and provide a review of our current financial performance. The Board will discuss and then vote to approve the financial statements. 
 
  B. Budget Priorities for 2021-22 Discuss Kaleem Caire 20 m
   
One City CEO will update the Board on budget priorities for the 2021-22 fiscal year, for discussion with members of the Board. The full budget will be presented to the Board for a vote at the July 2021 meeting.

  B. One City Student Enrollment Update for the 2021-22 School Year FYI M.Ruffin 10 m
   
We continue to strive for full enrollment for the 2021-22 school year. Enrollment figures as of June 18th, 2021 are: 217 students, 4K – 4th grade (w/ 5 pending).

We are targeting 278 for full enrollment. Our 4K, 5K and Grade 1 classrooms are full, with increasingly long waitlists.
Enrolling students for 4th grade continues to be a challenge.

Our current enrollment figures as of June 18, 2021 are:
Preschool – Tuition based: Orange Room (2 yrs old): 12 students and Green Room (3 yrs old): 15 students
Preschool - Charter (4K): – 37 students
Elementary School - 99 students (started w/ 102 students in 2020-21), 5K – 46 students, Grade 1 – 30 students, Grade 2 – 23 students
 
  C. Facilities Report FYI David Stephan and Sallie Martyniak 15 m
   
The Facilities Team has been very busy as work continues with Findorff and JLA, as contracts with both were approved by the Board at it's May 25th meeting.
The team is now holding weekly transition meetings with WPS and have asked WPS for permission to conduct a Phase II Environmental Survey. 
A zoning application has been submitted to the City of Monona Planning Commission. Approval of the application is expected.
The team recently met with  Zebra Dog to discuss working with them on space design at the new facility.  The interior of our school will tell the story of One City.
S. Martyniak and V. Ramakrishnan are working with Hamang Patel of  Michael Best on New Market Tax Credits. 
 
  D. Staffing Update FYI Kaleem Caire 5 m
   
Additional staffing needs for the 2021-22 school year are nearly filled. 21 out of 31 new staff members have been hired, including 8 Elementary School Lead Teachers, 7 Assistant Teachers, 1 Special Education Teacher, 2 Student Support Specialists, an Academies Coordinator, 1 Nurse and an HR Manager. 

Open positions include 2 Elementary Lead Teachers, 2 Preschool Lead Teachers, 1 Assistant Preschool Teacher, 1 Bilingual Social Worker, 1 Speech/Language Coordinator, 2 Cooks and 1 Nursing Assistant.

Please note that the total number of new positions that have been added to support the growth of our Preschool, Elementary and Secondary schools is 25.
 
Onboarding processes for newly hired staff have been developed. New staff  will receive a "care" package from One City Schools with reading materials and t-shirts prior to their first orientation session in July 2021. Board members will be invited to participate in an orientation activity.
 
We are delighted to welcome Ms. Jackie St. Onge as our new HR Manager. Her first day with us was June 1, 2021. Jackie will be reporting to David Stephan, our COO. Among Jackie's duties, she will assume responsibility for HR functions such as recruiting, interviewing, onboarding and retention. Her email address will be jstonge@onecityschools.org. 
 
  E. One City's 2021-22 Capital Campaign FYI Kaleem Caire 10 m
   
Members of the Capital Campaign Committee planning team will meet on June 23rd, to begin development of plans, including how we will approach and work with local and national champions and local and national partners and sponsors to ensure that our goals are achieved.

The Campaign will be rolled out in phases, over a three year period. A robust staffing team is being created to fully support the work of the Committee.

  3. Understanding charter schools - differences of a 2X charter school
  4. Funding streams in education:
