In-person Meeting Return: Governor Abbott’s March 2020 order temporarily suspending certain provisions of the Open Meetings Act due to the COVID-19 pandemic disaster expired August 31, 2021. Consequently, TCA+A Board Meetings will return to in-person meetings at Texas School of the Arts.

Daniel Bates called a meeting of the board of directors of Texas Center for Arts + Academics to order on Tuesday Jan 11, 2022 at 6:44 PM.

Approve November 16, 2021 Minutes

Leslie Scott made a motion to approve the minutes from TCA+A Board Meeting on 11-16-21.
Leslie Wade seconded the motion.
The board VOTED unanimously to approve the motion.

B.

Finance Statements

Leslie Scott made a motion to approve October 2021 and November 2021 Finance Statements.
Leslie Wade seconded the motion.
The board VOTED unanimously to approve the motion.

IV. Finance

A.

Presentation of FY2021 Audit

  • Ted Neeb from Freemon, Shapard & Story presented the completed audit for the year ending August 31, 2021 
  • Audit went very well and ever thing is in great shape; A+ Report
  • There are no findings!
  • Mr. Gravley sent out a special thanks to both Janelle Grau and Jocelyn Greenman for their hard work.
Mary A. Zimmerman made a motion to approve the FY2021 Audit.
Leslie Scott seconded the motion.
The board VOTED unanimously to approve the motion.

V. Academics

A.

Extension of Leave During Precautionary Exclusion

  • Extension approved in September expires today 
  • There continues to be an uptick of teachers out due to COVID
  • Requesting to extend for the second semester
Mary A. Zimmerman made a motion to extend leave during precautionary exclusion.
Leslie Wade seconded the motion.
The board VOTED unanimously to approve the motion.

B.

FWAFA Substitute Handbook

  • Do not currently have a substitute handbook
  • Gives universal information to all potential substitutes, including pay, confidentiality, conduct, etc.
  • Long term substitutes do not receive benefits; receive increased hourly pay
Leslie Scott made a motion to approve the FWAFA Substitute Handbook.
Leslie Wade seconded the motion.
The board VOTED unanimously to approve the motion.

C.

TeSA's Substitute Handbook

  • Do not currently have a substitute handbook
  • Gives universal information to all potential substitutes, including pay, confidentiality, conduct, etc.
  • Long term substitutes do not receive benefits; receive increased hourly pay

2020-2021 Texas Academic Performance Report

  • Mrs. Perkins presented reports for both FWAFA and TeSA
    • 2021 Accountability Rating: Not Rated: Declared State of Disaster
  • Areas of Growth:
    • Goal: Minimally our students will pass at Meets or higher
    • Closing the Gap: focused on looking at each student and seeing if we are adding value to each of them annually
    • Teachers: retention of staff by providing additional support, especially at the 1-5 year mark so we can keep them long term

2021 Results Driven Accountability

  • Mrs. Perkins presented both TeSA and FWAFA reports 
    • Results Driven Accountability looks at Special Populations
      • Bilingual Education/English as a Second Language & English Learner
      • Other Special Populations: Foster Care, Homeless, Military
      • Special Education

VI. CEO Report

A.

Updates

  • World Choir Games Tour 
    • Korea COVID rules
      • Anyone flying in is subject to a ten (10) day quarantine
      • Everyone has to pass a COVID test to fly back to the US
    • Parent Survey Results
      • 87% not willing to pay for an extra 10 days if required to quarantine
      • 11% would not be willing to share their vaccination status for planning purposes
      • Vast majority still want to go on a tour even if that is not to Korea
    • We will make a decision by next week on traveling to Korea vs taking a domestic tour
    • Potentially a Virtual Option to submit a concert to the World Choir Games that will be scored in its on category
  • Open Enrollment / Audition Season
    • Open Enrollment starts tomorrow and runs through February 14, 2022
    • Acceptance Letters go out by March 11, 2022 just before Spring Break
    • Still have one more Open House and two Audition Workshops 
  • Conservatory Information
    • 109 students participating in 158 classes
    • Conservatories and Summer Camps are great recruiting tools for our campuses
  • Development Director Introduction
    • Lauren Whitson is our new Development Director
    • Starts January 24, 2022
    • Most recently Lauren served as the  Director of Operations for the Katy Trail
