Goals for Academic Committee 2022-2023
- Ongoing data review of testing scores and goal (priority in Strategic Plan) to reduce achievement gap
- GLOBE graduate profile: Backwards design from this set of goals. What does this look like in K, 1, 2nd grade etc? --> Committee members decided to move this to an internal process so that teachers can be involved and work on it during regular planning time; to check in on in a few months.
- Capstone experience: What can this look like? --> These discussions will be for UC staff on the Committee and community members.
- DLI focus for longer-term: How to support students who are struggling to learn the TL
C.
Data Review
- What targeted actions have been happening per the Strategic Plan / staff focus, and what will need to continue in the next Strategic Plan?
- Process for identification / recommendation for advanced math
- Ask for Nov & Dec (or just Dec) meetings:
- Research best practices on closing achievement gap
- Ideas re: What can growth look like?
Notes:
- Joan Marks spoke to the need for clear communication about the identification process for accelerated math.
- Concern that rising number of ESOL students. Currently 1 ESOL teacher at UC – stretched pretty thin (new as of this year); beginning English learners - coming in starting in 2nd grade via STAMP testing, single digits in English reading (big strain on classrooms w gifted learners)
Lisa Dibble: 44 ESOL students at LC, 32 at UC
Many ESOL students don’t speak one of our languages (9 other languages among that group)
- Sabrina Manns: has begun to and will continue to look at MAP data breakdown by racial/ethnic groups; can look into research on best practices to close achievement gap
