II. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

A.

Welcome

Members of the committee shared hopes for 2023.  These included not getting Covid at the wrong time, launching young adult children, spend more time with children, finish my thesis, start a new career.

B.

Board Retreat Reflection

Board members who attended Board retreat at Parker shared out. These details included the strong impressions Parker students made on new board member.  Students were candid about the need for more kids of color in the school. It is clear that students feel Parker is a support culture.  The discussion on the book The Students are Watching by Ted and Nancy Sizer was a highlight of the retreat. Themes that emerged from this conversation were: the Parker community works to meet students where they are, getting them to the next level of skills, which varies amongst students. Parker staff works with students to self-actualize their goals and grow into learners for live.

C.

Recruitment Efforts and task delegation

Sonia leads discussion on efforts of ambassadors and recruitment work for Feb. 1st lottery.  A large question that continues to ever present is the challenge of transportation.  There is a lack of clarity on the results of carpool efforts.  Ambassadors do not yet have clear talking points related to transportation.

Questions raised: What can we do to further our efforts in the area of transportation?

How can we make the transportation system at Parker more transparent?

Final points of discussion

Reflection on community event held on January 6th with Mam-Yassin Sarr.

Question about what community events in Ayer and Shirley might further support enrollment efforts. Ruth said she would look into how we might table at Ayer library.

Mario and Sonia agreed to attend online Boys and Girls Club Enrollment meeting on January 31st.
