Mission Statement: Flex High School of Michigan recovers students who have dropped out or are in danger of dropping out of high school. We enroll students into a resource center, mentor, teach, and prepare them for graduation and college and career readiness.

M. Clark called a meeting of the board of directors of Flex High School of Michigan to order on Tuesday Jun 10, 2025 at 6:12 PM.

II. Approval of Agenda

A.

Approval of Agenda

W. Brown made a motion to approve the June 10, 2025, agenda.
M. Bruzewski seconded the motion.

After a brief discussion, the following action was taken to approve the agenda for the June 10, 2025, Regular Meeting of the Board of Directors of Flex High School of Michigan.

The board VOTED to approve the motion.

III. Approval of Prior Meeting Minutes

A.

Prior Meeting Minutes

M. Bruzewski made a motion to approve the minutes from Board Meeting on 05-22-25.
W. Brown seconded the motion.

It was recommended that the Board of Directors adopt, as presented, and approve the minutes of the May 22, 2025, Regular Meeting of the Board of Directors of Flex High School of Michigan. 

The board VOTED to approve the motion.

IV. Reports

A.

School Leader

Ms. Izzo shared on Senior check-ins, graduation preparations, and individualized student support activities are progressing well. She also mentioned key events and milestones for students and staff.

Ms. Izzo shared positions have been filled, but Special Education and CTE positions remain open, with ongoing efforts to recruit certified staff. She also shared Professional Development is planned to address instructional and compliance needs, supporting the transition to the 2025-2026 school year. She added she will plan PD sessions on specified dates, focusing on curriculum, technology, and compliance.

Ms. Izzo shared enrollment targets are on track, and attendance tracking is now more accurate due to system improvements. She also spoke on the transition to online curriculum is underway, with Burton already online and Flint scheduled to follow. 

Ms. Izzo shared on student of the month and birthday celebrations for students and staff.

Ms. Izzo shared on student progress tracking and intervention and will continue monitoring student module and course completion weekly and monthly. She will also apply interventions for students not meeting targets. She also mentioned that expectations are the same for both packet-based and online students.

Ms. Izzo shared on instructional strategies and professional development with steps to set up classroom schedules for small group instruction and to ensure visibility of intervention systems and MTSS triangle by summer.

Ms. Izzo shared on the advisory committee, is actively supporting the development of CTE programs and work-based learning, with structured meeting schedules. 

Ms. Izzo shared on the students visiting 2 colleges, Michigan Univ. and Kettering with hopes for starting a robotics team at the school.

Lastly, Ms. Izzo shared on Graduates have post-graduation plans, including employment, healthcare, trades, and military. She also reminded the board members Graduation is planned for June 12th at 6:00pm, with 20 graduates.

B.

Education Service Provider (ESP)

Mr. Berry shared on a three-tiered marketing proposal offers options for increasing enrollment through digital, TV, event, and billboard campaigns. He also shared on events, supported by HubSpot, are central to the marketing strategy for increasing enrollment and community engagement. Tier 2 marketing is recommended based on the current $35,000 budget, with the option to increase spending after November or December if needed.

Ms. Chase shared preparations are underway for the mid-July 2025 review meeting with updates to the board in July or August.

Ms. Chase also added the team is more optimistic about the appeal due to new information, allies, and a refined approach. 

Mr. Miller mentioned the appeal is about legal compliance, preserving the Academy’s rights, and also about telling a compelling story to influence decision-makers.

C.

Finance

Mr. Welsh shared on the financials dashboard as of April 30, 2025, and that financials are strong, with a surplus and healthy cash reserve.

D.

Committee Updates, as needed

Academic Excellence- Ms. Lepine shared that she met with Dr. Gibson and any updates were shared in Ms. Izzo’s report.

 

Finance- Mr. Clark stated he met with Mr. Welsh and went over the 2025-26 budget.

 

Governance- Ms. Brown shared on the board retreat and stated no date finalized; members will recheck availability and use Doodle poll to try again.

E.

Authorizer Updates

Mr. Merante gave an update on registering for the CMU conference and reception. He also mentioned due to legislation, there would be minimal increases expected in budget proposals, with only a $18 increase for charter schools, but that Federal funding is uncertain.

Election of Officers

D. Lepine made a motion to approve the Election of Officers as follows: Chair: Matthew Clark Vice Chair: Molly Bruzewski Treasurer: Wanda Brown Secretary: Tiffany Hughes.
M. Bruzewski seconded the motion.
The board VOTED to approve the motion.

B.

Chief Administrative Officer Designation

M. Bruzewski made a motion to approve the Chief Administrative Office Designation.
D. Lepine seconded the motion.
The board VOTED to approve the motion.

C.

Audit Engagement Letter

W. Brown made a motion to approve the Audit Engagement Letter, that states Lewis & Knopf will perform the annual audit.
M. Bruzewski seconded the motion.
The board VOTED to approve the motion.

D.

Final 24-25 Budget Amendment

D. Lepine made a motion to approve the Final 24-25 Budget Amendment.
W. Brown seconded the motion.
The board VOTED to approve the motion.

E.

2025-26 Initial Budget

M. Bruzewski made a motion to approve 2025-26 Initial Budget.
W. Brown seconded the motion.
The board VOTED to approve the motion.

F.

Approval of Expenditures

M. Bruzewski made a motion to approve the expenditure of $31.78 for meeting snacks payable to Molly Bruzewski.
W. Brown seconded the motion.
The board VOTED to approve the motion.
