N. Campbell called a meeting of the Academic Excellence Committee of Summit Academy Charter School to order on Monday Feb 5, 2018 at 6:23 PM.

Group Norms:
  1. Identify, prioritize and adhere to agenda topics.
  2. Determine when an agenda items requires a full conversation vs. just a mention.

A.

The Site Visit

During visit, guests will see:
  1. A 5 part lesson (do now, mini-lesson [framing/hook, chunking, CFU's], guided practice, independent practice, assessment/exit ticket)
    1. Need to increase time students have doing independent practice.
    2. Shift to block planning to increase time on task for scholars.
    3. Non-testing classes will be 40 minutes and tested classes will have 80 - 106 minutes twice per week.

V. Academic Performance

A.

State Tests

  • By cohort there are tremendous gains each year.
  • When the average is determined, the school is not matching the district.
  • SACS will seek to see at least 50% of scholar population pass the state assessment for the 2017 - 2018.
  • In February SACS shifts to focus on priority standards and test preparation.

Take Aways

  • Knowledge of education terminology to better understand school nuances
  • How to address the barriers to learning
  • Schedule adjustment to give scholars more time on task
  • Harness high participation from PTC to get more homework completion
  • Focus on the narrative 
  • It takes a lot to shape learning for each audience
  • Need to bridge the gap between immediate need to knows with strategic planning for the future
  • Focus on strategies for each subject.
