Call the Meeting to Order

Y. Houlder called a meeting of the board of trustees of Summit Academy Charter School to order on Tuesday Mar 7, 2017 at 7:10 PM.

Approve Minutes

Y. Houlder made a motion to approve minutes from the Board Meeting on 01-30-17 Board Meeting on 01-30-17.
J. Bailin seconded the motion.
The board VOTED unanimously to approve the motion.

II. Academic Excellence

A.

Principal's Report

MS Focus
  • State assessments begin in two weeks
    • ELA push for next two weeks with all teachers supporting regardless of content expertise
    • Data day last week to strategize for test prep
    • 6th grade seeing the least gains.  They came in as our lowest group in school history.
    • 7th grade is doing better in ELA than they were last year, especially with scholars who did not perform well in 6th grade.
    • 8th grade is on target to see gains as well in ELA.
  • Concerns
    • SPED scholars are not seeing significant gains.   Need to work with SPED teachers to read with emotion and inflection so scholars can understand text.
    • Staff does not have the capacity to manage classrooms and teach content.
    • Need to revamp the SPED department
    • Possible suspension of enrichment in 6th grade until after testing is over
HS Focus
  • Graduation Rate
    • Seniors suffering from senioritis
    • Meeting with individual scholars and parents in the next few weeks
    • Empowering scholars to become advocates for themselves
Highlights 
  • A Raisin in the Sun
  • Read Across  America Day
  • Women's History in Black
  • SUNY Partnership
    • Suny will be in the school next week to ensure that scholars have applied
  • Spirit week

School Led Fundraising

  • Ellen
    • $25,000 gift for school to be considered part of $250,000 fundraising obligation
    • $1.6 million in scholarships 
    • Robin Hood meeting on March 13th
  • BPC
    • Largest woman minority run fundraising organization
    • Natasha and Yvette to work on proposals to share with BPC
  • On-Line gifts over the past month: $2,000
  • Participatory Budgeting: Summit Academy is on the ballot for the first time
    • 11 education projects in the district.
    • Voting between March 25th - April 2nd
    • Need upwards of 2000 votes

Framework for 2017 - 2018 Budget

  • 5-year budget available for review on board on track
  • Instruction has $2.9 million for 2017 - 2018 school year; Operations $215,000 for 2017 - 2018 school year
  • Next draft of budget available for the next board meeting

V. Governance

A.

Board Recruitment Event

  • Kevin's was not available to us so the meet and greet was cancelled
  • Doodle will go out for dates.
  • Yvette suggested Borough Hall.

B.

Potential Board Member

  • Will be meeting at the school in the next few weeks
  • West Point graduate
  • Making congressional run next year
  • Retired boxer

Y. Houlder made a motion to adjourn the meeting.
R. Guarini seconded the motion.
The motion did not carry.
