Mary wants to officially welcome Carmen and Amy to the Academic Committee. Mary is the new chair of the committee. Kyle Gavin will be joining moving forward. Future meetings will not occur on Thursdays at 11 and will shift to Fridays.

Chrissy and Kyle shared more about their respective school-based roles and how they interface with the committee as Chief Academic Officer and Principal.

Preliminary ILEARN data has now been released from Spring 2026 administration. Typically results are released at the end of May. Due to a new test, this was delayed and the data is still embargoed.

Chrissy reviewed with the committee the state's testing infrastructure, including the administration of 3 checkpoint assessments throughout the year, each with different topic focus areas, followed by a summative assessment of all grade level standards. Chrissy also broke down the proficiency data and what each designation (below, approaching, at/above) means in real context.

Chrissy discussed preliminary big-picture ILEARN data for both ELA and Math from the 2026 administration, including overall approaching and at/above data, special population data (including Special Education, MLL, and racial sub-groups), grade level data, by years enrolled, and percentage who passed both ELA and Math.

Amy asked to add comparison data with three groups: Indiana average, IPS average, and Zone 4 averages. Mary stated that the data slides were the right amount of detail vs. general and appropriate for the next board meeting presentation in October.

Chrissy then discussed BOY DIBELS data, first outlining the purpose of the assessment, then what the Beginning of Year (BOY) administration results, including the frame that BOY data is not used to assess instructional effectiveness (like ILEARN), but instead give us a baseline to track growth from now until MOY in December and EOY in May.

For the first time, Adelante administered the i-Ready assessment as the math growth indicator. i-Ready is the new assessment mandated by the state. Amy and Mary asked to clarify the indicators to be more "board-friendly", for example, editing the language of "Well Below" to "2+ grade levels below" so the board correctly understands i-Ready's unique proficiency bands.

Chrissy then took the committee through IREAD-3 scores, diving into the same basic analysis as ILEARN, including strong results from African-American and Hispanic students.

Chrissy then outlined what internal steps are being taken to address the data, including a focus on fluency, based on this takeaway from the data: students aren't understanding what they're reading because they aren't yet fluent readers.
