During the study session, the Board continued its ongoing review of Policy Governance materials, including Executive Requirements Policies ER-1 and ER-3, as well as the District Board Member Handbook. The purpose of the review was to ensure policies remain relevant, clear, and effective while reducing redundancy and improving readability.
The Board discussed proposed revisions to ER-1: Expectations of the Superintendent, focusing on simplifying language and removing duplicative content while maintaining the policy's original intent and the Board's governance, monitoring, and evaluation responsibilities related to the Superintendent. Following discussion, the Board made several revisions and agreed to bring the updated policy forward for first reading at the October Board meeting.
The Board also reviewed ER-3: Treatment of Parents, Students, Staff, and the Public. Members expressed concerns regarding the policy's complexity and noted that many of its provisions may already be addressed in other Board policies. The Board discussed whether maintaining a separate Executive Requirement is necessary and assigned members to review related policies to identify potential overlap and determine if the policy could be eliminated to reduce redundancy within the policy framework.
Additionally, Board President Nicole Gonzalez Timmons shared updates to the District Board Member Handbook. The Board discussed continuing its review of the handbook and expressed interest in scheduling additional study sessions after the first of the year to gather board member input and further refine the document.
The policy review process is part of the Board's broader effort to modernize governance documents that have not undergone a comprehensive review in several years.
