Discussion
M. Alston summarized the school plans for reopening after break. MET had a 2 week quarantine period after the holidays with a time frame of returning January 19th, 2021. The Highbridge covid cases have risen 14-15%. it's the highest covid cases in the Bronx. M. Alston would like to request the board to let the school leadership make decisions for covid related matters.
K. Davidson said the ultimate goal is to reopen school for hybrid learning but anticipates that if DOE becomes more aggressive with schools reopening he would not like to make rash decisions. Right before Christmas break Cuomo, said that schools located in areas where cases rise by 3%, schools would be asked to close. K. Davidson also stated that he is following the NYS page rigorously to stay up to date with the covid rises.
M. Alston says that she is insuring that the school will be prepared to open if necessary. She has a vendor for Covid testing for staff and students, but it's not in place yet. The school lawyer and M. Alston have been working on the consent form for covid testing. At the moment the school is in the yellow zone but can quickly move to orange.
J. Boulet asked about the decision making with the covid vaccine. K. Davidson said that he is following the law and can't mandate the staff but has encouraged staff to get the vaccine. The state is asking for staff in the building to get the vaccine first. K. Davidson stated that they are planning to have a significant amount of scholars that will remain remote because families will not feel comfortable getting their scholars vaccinated.
M. Alston shared that during this difficult time our enrollment numbers are still strong and It shows that we are doing the right thing for our school community. E. Chen asked are we still trying to follow the DOE, which is stated in the reopening plan? M. Alston shared that it's difficult to follow what the DOE is doing, especially when information comes on the same day. E. Chen asked if there is a certain guidance that DOE provides about these types of decisions making with reopening. M. Alston said that they have a good relationship with the Charters authorizer and they trust our schools leadership to make the right decision.
