Call the Meeting to Order

E. Chen called a meeting of the Education Committee of Nuasin Next Generation Charter School to order on Wednesday Jun 17, 2020 at 3:00 PM.

Approve Minutes

E. Chen made a motion to approve the minutes from Education Committee Monthly Call on 05-20-20.
J. Boulet seconded the motion.
The committee VOTED to approve the motion.

II. Education Updates

K - 8 Principal Updates

    1. Kurt: organizing transition state
      1. Online IA: concerns on the reliability of data; should we include in the dashboard? ELA has continuous growth; and 6-8 grade math has improved
        1. Return to school plan: assessment and the importance around it – will be a hybrid of learning – when students are in school, they’ll take test
        2. If 100% remote learning again, will enforce using school distributed chrome books focus on 1) access 2) quality
      2. Middle school participation and quality of work has been improving and doing – making sure teachers 3-5 are using the chrome books as part of the core curriculum
      3. Summer school – next week to pick up summer pack for every student; Ms. Whitehead is preparing – 100% student are invited – Levinean group for close reading; math teaching over the summer – teacher selection

9 - 11 Principal Updates

    1. Tyra: next level accountability and concerned about mental health
      1. IA data are in, no final exams, moved towards project-based assessment
      2. Kids are tuning out: low results on pre-SAT and pre-ACT – a large number of students are unengaged
      3. Plan for school return (for all scenarios) – cultural team is very important if we continue w/ 100% remote learning
      4. 8->12 graders need more motivation to engage in online learning – has been reaching out to parents – has been emphasizing on credit earning
      5. Parents are not reliable w/ what’s going on w/ students
      6. Hard to have assessment when kids are not even showing up
      7. All classes are available online for summer; August
      8. Summer school data from Apex

    1. Ms. Whitehead: dashboard data to include YoY data and cohort data; 3-8 tracking of cohort and YoY trend
    2. Karin:
      1. Moving IAs to digital – due to current observations
      2. Project-based learning: 2nd, 5th grades and CPA (biz and art classes) grades to pilot – how to create student voice
      3. NY authorizers have different requirement for remote learning – team is planning
      4. Summer school planning: open up to all families and developing mandated list
