Call the Meeting to Order

A. Cathey called a meeting of the board of directors of Frayser Community Schools to order on Tuesday Apr 14, 2020 at 5:31 PM.

Approve Minutes

A. Elliott made a motion to approve the minutes from FCS Board Meeting on 03-10-20.
E. Henneghan seconded the motion.
The board VOTED to approve the motion.

Remembering the Vision

Dr. Bobby White:
  • Praise and commendation for FCS network team and faculty and staff for their ability to gracefully adjust from schools closing to distance learning

III. Academic Excellence

A.

Academic Excellence Committee Updates

COVID-19 Distance Learning/Graduation Updates from FCS Leadership 
  • FCS Principals
    • MLK Prep - Ms. Delnita Mickey:
      • Providing students with packets, but also attempting to increase students' engagement with Canvas
      • MLK Prep team exploring graduation ideas for 110-120 graduating seniors
      • Possible virtual ceremony and a happy trails basket for each senior
    • Humes Middle School - Dr. Lakisha Robinson:
      • Teachers have really stepped up and are showing great leadership despite the circumstances
      • Using technology to lead daily 10:00 AM power hours
      • With the support of Whole Child Strategies, the school has been able to organize gift card distribution for students and families
    • Westside Middle School - Dr. Rodney Peterson:
      • Packets are being distributed and faculty staff are providing parents and children with support logging into Canvas
      • Staff have started conducting wellness calls
  • Mr. King:
    • Coordinated efforts for staff at each school to conduct regular wellness calls to all students and families
    • Teams at each school have serve as dispatch for resources and referrals for special needs

IV. Finance

A.

Finance Committee Updates

Greg Thompson:
  • Cash position around 1.94M, trending to break even this year with the board initially approving a budget in the red at the beginning of the academic year.
  • Enrollment is 1,167 currently vs. 1,110 last year across all three schools
  • 84 days of cash on hand
  • Applied for the Paycheck Protection Program that provides forgivable loans to small businesses for payroll related expenses due to COVID-19 crisis
  • Our funding request was for 1.5 million

V. Development

A.

Development Committee Updates

Erik Henneghan:
  • Due to COVID-19, the fundraiser the development committee has been working on has been cancelled
  • Still interested in exploring fundraising options for FCS Day on May 23
  • Can an event be hosted in a virtual format?
Ricky Floyd:
  • A possible fundraising option that some may consider outdated is hosting a telethon
  •  Offer the church's facility and technology to make the event happen, it can also be streamed online
  • A committee meeting will be held next week to discuss event

Governance Committee Updates

Arlinda Fair: 
  • No new developments in this area
  • Dr. White and leadership team are working to begin the charter application
  • CEO Evaluation distribution was delayed due to transitions in March but will be distributed to board members and network level staff before the end of April 
  • Additional conversations need to be had in regards to annual board retreat this year

Announcements

Ricky Floyd: 
  • There will be  a gas giveaway tomorrow at the Marathon station on James and Hollywood (April 15) from 10:00 AM - 1:30 PM. Looking for men to volunteer, masks and and gloves will be provided.
Steve Lockwood:
  • Christ Community Health Center in Frayser will now conduct COVID-19 testing

  • Any educators seeking employment opportunities should contact Mr. Potts for additional information
