Staff Report
Mr. Lewis shared that we are all-in with our new online curriculum with StrongMind, and are in the second week of Parent-Teacher Conferences. First time we have hosted formal Parent-Teacher Conferences. Our next Board of Directors meeting is later this month, looking at finances primarily. We are working on a Filming Project in two weeks, in LA and Santa Ana, to create promotional videos on Compass (interested members can eMail Mr. Lewis to express interest in being filmed today). He also shared that we are looking for testimonials on various sites, including Google, Facebook and Great Schools; looking for members to share positive reviews:
- Google: http://bit.ly/2mvSvW7
- Facebook: http://bit.ly/2z66Ez8
- Great Schools: will work on links, not ready as of today
VI. New Business
A.
Review and Discussion of Council Charge
Mr. Lewis reviewed the council charge and opened the floor for discussion. This is the first year of operation for the Scholar Leadership Council, to be the eyes and ears of scholars at Compass and share the good, bad, and ugly to talk about suggestions and ways to make improvements to the Compass experience for scholars. Members represent over 1,000 scholars.
B.
Review and Discussion of Communication Initiatives
Mr. Lewis shared current communication efforts at Compass Charter Schools, including the Monday Morning Update (MMU), quarterly newsletters and social media. The MMU comes out every Monday morning around 8:30 am, and is also posted on both the School tab in the Parent Scholar Portal and Parent & Scholar Resources section of the website. The first quarterly newsletter came out in September, next issue comes out next Wednesday. Compass is on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and a few other channels.
Ms. Gordon shared that we receive enough information. Mr. Stansbury mentioned that communication is a lot better from prior years, and there is a lot more contact. Ms. Linares shared that they know about events and other activities quicker, and it's a lot easier to get information. Ms. Millaris said sometimes it is too hard to read as their is so much information, and it might be good to have less text and more links to the information.
Mr. Lewis asked members to think about questions for a survey to be run over Winter Break, about communication, events, etc. Not more than 10 questions total, one or two questions per member. Will be discussed under Unfinished Business at the next meeting.

Review and Discussion of Engagement Initiatives
Mr. Lewis shared information about current engagement initiatives. Mrs. MacAlpine, our Scholar Engagement Coordinator, plans and promotes a number of field trips each month across the state.
Mr. Stansbury shared that we should look at more field trips in LA. Ms. Zorba mentioned that most field trips are not accessible to her due to distance, and would be interested in weekend field trips. Ms. Gordon said she has not been on a field trip as there have not been too many that were exciting near the Carlbad area, would be interested in the camping trip but she is only in 6th grade and it is for 7th and 8th graders; also suggested Disneyland as a possibility. Ms. Linares suggested field trips catered to specific grades, like high school and elementary. Ms. Millaris shared that she cannot go on field trips as she is really far from everything, but does have an interest in a science camp possibly.
