• January 27th Open House at Great Wolf Lodge.  Event with other schools.  A booth was provided to SA.  
• Discussed reasons for resignation of Executive Director are due to needing something different and that experience at SA has been excellent.

Parents' Bill of Rights (December Policy Compliance Goal):

• New policy for compliance with North Carolina's Act to Enumerate the Rights of Parents to Direct the Upbringing, Education, Health Care and Mental Health of their Minor Children.  (SB 49).

• The policy is presented December 11, 2023 for a final vote after a November 27, 2023 first read.

• The SA administration, Governance committee,  and Policy committee will work on procedures to address the logistical implications raised by the adoption of these policies. 

• The recent budget passage extends the implementation of new legislation, commonly known as the Parents’ Bill of Rights, to Jan. 1, 2024 from September 15, 2023.

• The statute requires that a Parent’s Guide to Student Achievement is provided to parents, students, and school personnel no later than the first day of school after January 1, 2024.  Based on school calendars across the state, the first day of school is in August for traditional calendars and July for year-round calendars.  DPI interprets the completion date as the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year. 

•  Additionally, the law (SB49) stipulates (115C-76.30): “The State Board of Education shall develop minimum requirements for public school units for a parent's guide to student achievement to provide what parents need to know about their child's educational progress and how they can help their child to succeed in school.”

• The NC Department of Education adopted a Parent’s Guide to Student Achievement policy on December 7, 2023. The NC Dept. of Public Instruction (DPI) held a webinar on Monday, December 11, 2023 @11:00 to review and release resources to support the development of the Guide.  (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1x_XQ6xwY6_cQuGz0nRC7V8sCrsgTsrpaOlWmspcrWjs/edit)The attached Guide Template and Policy documents were provided by DPI and they will be utilized in addition to advise from counsel to prepare a SA specific Parent's Guide to Student Achievement for implementation in the 2024-2025 year.  DPI would like the guide completed by May, 2024.
