Call the Meeting to Order

J. Reilly called a meeting of the board of directors of KIPP Capital Region Public Charter Schools to order on Wednesday Dec 18, 2024 at 7:32 AM.

Approval of Minutes

J. Reilly made a motion to approve the minutes from KIPP Capital Region Board Meeting on 10-23-24.
The board VOTED to approve the motion.

II. Public Comment

A.

Parent 1 expresses concerns

Parent expressed concerns about the proposed increase in the size of the high school, the high level of teacher turnover at Troy Prep Middle School (KTPM), the perceived decline in the school's quality of education, a lack of leadership at KIPP, and decrease in KTPM's ability to prepare kids for college among other concerns

Parent 2 expresses concerns

Parent expressed concerns about safety at KTPM and the school's failure to investigate incidents.

Parent 3 expresses concern

Parent expressed concerns about the KTPM's failure to provide her daughter with adequate psychological counseling among other issues.

Parent 4 expresses concerns

Parent expressed concerns about what she sees as the declining quality of education at KTPM and KIPP Troy Prep High School (KTPH), the treatment of kids at the school, and the frequency of suspensions at the school.

Parent 5 expresses concerns

Parent expressed concerns that, as recently as this year, KTPM's environment has deteriorated. She believes the principal is too lax and has allowed the kids to misbehave inside the school. Specifically, she believes that there isn't enough discipline and structure in the school, and as a result the quality of education has suffered.

F.

Parent 6 expresses concerns

Parent expressed concerns that KTPH is allowing some kids to leave at 12:30. He believes that this affects their academic success. He hopes that stronger leadership from the top can improve the school.

G.

Parent 7 expresses concerns

Parent expressed concern about the school's leadership and lack of communication with parents. Furthermore, she believes that KTPM has lost its structure and fails to offer quality extracurricular activities to students. Also, she expressed concern about the school's failure to help kids who struggled academically and socially during the COVID pandemic through her experience transitioning her child from KIPP Troy Prep Elementary (KTPE) to KTPM.

III. Management & Committee Reports

Management Reports

Discussed the addition and recruitment of new members tot the board. Discusses the structure of the executive committee (more to be discussed February) and an annual retreat

S. Valle, M. Wright, N. Dennis, G. Boyd, and J. Martin presented key metric data from the 24-25 school year. Board compared the current data with stated goals and discussed the results.

B.

Committees

Shai proposed that, given the lengthy and concerning discussion by parents at the meeting, the board should postpone discussion of the board assessment. 

Announced fundraising event scheduled for March 27th and plans to celebrate school's anniversary.

Progress to Goals & Data Update

PSAT/SAT Results

 

Results of student performance on the PSAT and SAT discussed. Metrics reviewed include Percent of Students meeting EBRW/Math Benchmark, Percent of Students not yet approaching EBRW/Math Benchmark, and EBRW/Math Average percentile rank.

Myles Clendenin presented on KIPP College Highlights and Post-Secondary Success. 

 

Myles discussed goals for KIPP including the One KIPP Aspiration that 75% of KIPPsters will be on track for college admission by the 2027/28 school year. Highlights from last year included the College and Career Exposure initiatives and the HBCU NYC College Fair Trip. Data presented included college application data. Myles also shared an anecdote about one KIPP senior who was recently accepted to Georgetown University

Shanell Crowley announced as new Director of Human Resources and Kathleen DelSignore announced as new Director of Talent Acquisition & Attraction

Approval of New Board Members

C. Young made a motion to Approve Gina Feliciano to the Board.
K. Young Wilkins seconded the motion.
The board VOTED to approve the motion.

B.

Set the number of Trustees on the KIPP Capital Region Board

R. Bellafiore made a motion to Set number of trustees to 12.
C. Young seconded the motion.
The board VOTED to approve the motion.

C.

Approval of the FY24 KIPP Capital Region Audit

S. Butler made a motion to Approve the audit.
C. Young seconded the motion.
The board VOTED to approve the motion.

D.

Approval of the SY 25-26 Student Application and Policies

K. Young Wilkins made a motion to Approve the SY 25-26 Student Application and Policies.
C. Young seconded the motion.
The board VOTED to approve the motion.
