  A. NYS Testing Update: Grades 3-8 ELA

  • All schools administered the one-day ELA exam in ELA between April 19 - 29.  Number tested by grade is in the attached document.
  • All students (remote and in-person) were offered the opportunity to test.  Remote students had to come into the building as only in-person testing was offered.  Below is regional language for remote students:

As you may know, NYS has announced that ELA and Math tests for Grades 3 - 8 and Science Tests for Grades 4 & 8 will take place this year, with modifications, based on guidance from the federal government.  Modifications to the tests will be as follows:
  • Each subject will only be a one-day test (as opposed to two-days normally).  Additionally, the test will be shorter this year, with less questions to complete.
  • The science test will be the written exam only - students/scholars will not take the "hands-on" portion of the test.
As your student/scholar is fully remote, NYS is not offering remote testing nor does your student/scholar have to come into school to take the test.  However, the tests will be an opportunity for students/scholars to show what they have learned this year as well as help the school plan for what learning looks like next year.  There are no consequences for students/scholars in taking these tests or not taking the tests this year; again, it will only give our school information about where students/scholars are on grade-level standards.  While no one test can provide a complete picture of a child’s learning, these assessments along with grades, classroom activities and participation, school-based tests and quizzes, and other assessments help us understand how we can best support a student’s learning moving forward.

Based on the number of remote students interested in testing, remote students will either test on the same days as in-person students or use the make-up exam days.  All students will be required to wear masks at all times during the test, be appropriately socially distanced, and follow all school screening procedures to come into the building.

We will be administering tests on the following dates:
  • ELA Test Date: [insert]
  • ELA Make-Up Date: [insert]
  • Math Test Date: [insert]
  • Math Make-Up Date: [insert]
  • Grade 4/8 Science Test Date: [insert]
  • Grade 4/8 Science Make-Up Date: [insert]

If you would like your remote student/scholar to take any or all of the state tests (again, in-person testing is the only option offered by NYS), please contact [insert] by [suggested by April 16] and we will share details of testing logistics.

Please remember that your child’s scores on the state tests will not affect their grades or impact our evaluation of your child’s teacher. While no single test can provide a complete picture of a child’s abilities, annual assessments are considered along with grades, classroom activities, unit quizzes and tests to help us understand how we can best support a student’s learning moving forward. With all of these, we simply ask that our students try their best.
