MCPSA Board Diagnostic Survey Results

This year the Massachusetts Charter Public School Association (MCPSA) sent a survey to Board members and then were able to provide charter schools that participated with a personalized board dashboard that illustrates the strengths and areas of growth for their board as well as shares statewide data. As boards are a crucial component to high-quality and sustainable schools, continuous improvement is an essential part of the work.

The committee watches the eight minute video about the survey and results using a sample school.

The committee reviews the statewide and Veritas Prep specific survey data.

It is important to note that 9 Board members responded to this survey. Something we took away from the results was that one Board member said they didn't see academic data on a regular basis. This was a great point as the Academic Achievement committee looks at data at their monthly meetings but we don't bring enough of this back to the whole Board. We will do more of that moving forward.

Rachel suggested we want to look at this and determine how valuable we think this is and how much we want to use it or how we want to bring it to the whole Board. The committee reviewed the survey results. Standard 1 - focus on academic was mostly high and there is one area for improvement, 33% say they do not regularly review achievement. We can improve this. Standard 2 - mostly high, just one that shows potential for improvement which is school leader goals progress monitoring "at least quarterly". Standard 3 - commit to exemplary governance is positive and there are a couple of areas where we can improve.

Xiomara thinks it is a good idea to share these results and discuss with the board and suggested a live dashboard for academic achievement data. Rachel explained we actually have one but it would be challenging for a trustee to make sense of without context but we can work on rolling it up and getting trustees access to it. This can be a goal of the year ahead. Governance will share this report with all trustees at June meeting and will continue to discuss and synthesize the results in order to make recommendations for potential actions at the July meeting.
