Review of State of the School Presentations
Meeting Structure and Presentation Format
Amy proposed presenting the State of the School by goals rather than by school levels (middle and high school) to make it more cohesive.
- Rebecca suggested organizing the board retreat presentation by goals, with both schools sharing information around each goal simultaneously.
Middle School Performance and Highlights
The middle school achieved significant budget savings and more intentional spending.
- There was an improvement in English language learners' ACCESS testing scores, with a 13% progress rate.
- MAP testing showed strong growth in ELA and math, with 7th-grade math students in the 84th percentile of growth.
- Student-led conferences were successfully implemented, with 80% of 8th-grade students leading their own conferences.
- Chronic absenteeism was reduced, though concerns were raised about the quality of learning during Saturday school sessions.
Middle School Challenges
Low academic achievement and inconsistent growth in some areas were identified as challenges.
- Student culture and school climate raised concerns, with survey results indicating low enthusiasm and positive relationships among staff.
- The team discussed the need to address low performers and improve the overall culture and performance of the school.
High School Performance and Highlights
The Early College Convening was highlighted as a successful dissemination event.
- Math and reading interventions showed promising results, with significant percentages of students testing out of needing further intervention.
- College and career readiness programs were implemented, with 100% of Worcester State students and 99% of STCC students completing college courses.
- The school became an innovative career pathway, offering 3D printing and advanced manufacturing courses.
High School Challenges
Chronic absenteeism remained a significant issue, particularly among identified students.
- The staff survey showed mixed results, with some improvements but still room for growth in areas like enthusiasm and communication from leaders.
- Low achievement, particularly in math, was identified as a major gap to close.
General Discussion on College Readiness and Academic Goals
The team discussed the tension between early college enrollment and ensuring students are truly ready for college-level work.
- There was a consideration of whether the 50% goal for college enrollment was appropriate, with some suggesting a need to slow down and ensure deeper preparation.
- The importance of preparing students not just for community college but for more rigorous four-year institutions was emphasized.
