I. Opening Items

A.

Call the Meeting to Order

Director Rohrer called a meeting of the board of directors of Steilacoom Historical School District to order on Wednesday Apr 16, 2025 at 6:00 PM.

B.

Pledge of Allegiance

Executive Director Susanne Beauchaine led the Pledge of Allegiance.

C.

Roll Call

Directors Lewis, McDonald, and Rohrer present. 

Directors Scott and Tinsley absent.

Director Lewis made a motion to excuse Directors Scott and Tinsley.
Director McDonald seconded the motion.
The board VOTED unanimously to approve the motion.

D.

Agenda Review

Director Rohrer asked if anyone had any questions about the agenda. No questions.

Director Lewis made a motion to approve the agenda.

II. PRESENTATIONS

A.

Steilacoom High School Band

Steilacoom High School Principal Jake Tyrrell introduced Band Director Matt Vegh. Mr. Vegh introduced SHS senior Douglas Weaver, who performed a snare drum solo "Truc a Trac" by Nicolas Martynciow.

 

The directors commended Douglas on an amazing performance and thanked him for sharing his incredible talents.

B.

Certificated School Employees Recognition

Executive Director for Human Resources Susanne Beauchaine thanked the district's certificated staff for their contributions and unwavering dedication to the education of our district's students. The district employs 179 certificated staff. The average years of teaching experience among these staff members is 15 years, and 85% of our certificated staff hold at least a master's degree. The district also has 20 Nationally Board Certified Teachers. Ms. Beauchaine introduced Steilacoom Education Association President Stephanie Mateus, as well as other staff members in attendance.

Volunteer Appreciation

Ms. Beauchaine thanked the almost 900 district volunteers for their over 7,000 hours serving in numerous capacities throughout the district. She introduced district principals, who recognized exceptional volunteers for their buildings.

 

  • Steilacoom High School Principal Jake Tyrrell recognized Eddie Johnson, "The Voice of the Sentinels." Mr. Johnson volunteers his time announcing SHS athletic events, as well as volunteering his time on campus throughout the year.
  • Pioneer Middle School Principal JoAnne Fernandes recognized Kenneth Hayes. Mr. Hayes serves as a WatchD.O.G. and Ms. Fernandes thanked him for being a positive presence on Pioneer's campus. 
  • Saltar's Point Elementary Principal Alex Clauson recognized Melanie Tinsley. Ms. Tinsley is absent from tonight's meeting because she is volunteering at Pioneer's 6th grade outdoor camp. Melanie volunteers through the PTA at countless events throughout the year.
  • Chloe Clark Elementary Principal Loretta Duncan recognized Victoria Deedon and Jenni Balentine. Victoria and Jenni were not able to be in attendance this evening. Ms. Deedon is Chloe Clark's current PTA Treasurer, and she also works on the school yearbook and at other school events. Ms. Balentine is at Chloe Clark at least 3 times a week assisting with volunteer appreciation, bingo night, reader board updates, classroom support, and so much more.
  • Cherrydale Primary Principal Christine Firth recognized Linda Perez. Ms. Perez is a retired Cherrydale paraeducator, and she continues to give back to Cherrydale in classrooms, in the library, and throughout the school.
  • Anderson Island Elementary Principal Mike Miller recognized Virginia Cummings and Buela Robb (Island Arts). Ms. Cummings and Ms. Robb visit AIE monthly to work on art projects with students.

 

Directors thanked the volunteers for donating their time and energy to our students.

IV. REPORTS

A.

Budget Status Report

Sarah Jahn, Chief Financial Officer, shared budget status reports for all funds as of the end of March 2025, along with charts and data showing monthly attendance, general fund balance, and general fund cash balance.

 

No questions.

B.

Legislative Report

Director Rohrer shared WSSDA is now accepting positions to improve their organization. She also shared details regarding bills that passed off the floor today. Budgets and amendments will be released tomorrow.

Approval of March 19 2025 Regular Board Meeting Minutes

Director Lewis made a motion to approve as part of Consent Agenda March 19 2025 Regular Board Meeting on 03-19-25.
Director McDonald seconded the motion.
The board VOTED unanimously to approve the motion.

Director Lewis made a motion to approve the Consent Agenda.

VI. NEW BUSINESS

A.

Approval of Resolution 933-04-16-25 National Mental Health Awareness Month

Susanne Beauchaine shared Resolution 933-04-16-25 National Mental Health Awareness Month. Ms. Beauchaine shared the resolution recognizes that mental health is essential for a person's overall health. The district encourages all school staff and community members to support and participate in activities to recognize and support mental health awareness, and declares may to be Mental Health Awareness Month in the Steilacoom Historical School District.

Director Lewis made a motion to approve Resolution 933-04-16-25 National Mental Health Awareness Month.
Director McDonald seconded the motion.
The board VOTED unanimously to approve the motion.

B.

Board Goal - Professional Learning

Director Lewis attended WSSDA's Regional Meeting where discussion focused around the theme of Leading with Purpose.

DIrector McDonald received communication that was resolved.

Announcements

Director Rohrer thanked our Food Services Department for all their efforts in hosting the Future Chefs competition as well as everything else they do.

C.

Adjourn Meeting

Director Lewis made a motion to adjourn the meeting.
Director McDonald seconded the motion.
The board VOTED unanimously to approve the motion.
There being no further business to be transacted, and upon motion duly made, seconded and approved, the meeting was adjourned at 6:33 PM.
