Call the Meeting to Order

D. Lyles-Wallace called a meeting of the Academic Excellence Committee of KIPP Memphis Public Schools to order on Tuesday Feb 4, 2025 at 5:04 PM.

L. Johnson arrived at 5:27 PM.

Review of Agenda

The agenda was reviewed with no additional changes

Approval of Minutes from previous committee meeting

L. Sweet made a motion to approve the minutes from Academic Committee Meeting on 11-05-24.
J. Maina seconded the motion.
The committee VOTED unanimously to approve the motion.

II. Academic Excellence Presentation

A.

Student Academic Performance

Chief Tate presented and gave an overview of the following:

  • mClass Dibels:  Key metrics included mClass Dibels data showing significant growth in reading proficiency across grades, with notable improvements in kindergarten and fifth grade. An all-in-one system for Science of Reading-based universal screening, dyslexia screening, progress monitoring, and instructions for grades K-8.  Multisyllabic decoding has been implemented so the kids are breaking down words and understanding prefixes, suffixes, and root words.
    • Reviewed where KIPP Landed in Benchmark Testing from the BOY to the MOY.   
    • On Track/Mastered - mClass Dibels Region Comparison: KIPP Memphis is number 7 out of 28 regions.
  • Mastery Connect Benchmark:  The assessment solution built for standards-based learning. 
    • ELA/ENG - Science - Social Studies:  On-Track & Mastery for all Schools, Benchmark #1, Benchmark #2, and AMO. 
      • ELA/ENG goal was met for Benchmarks 1 & 2 for all Schools.
      • Science goal was met by KMCH only.
      • Social Studies goal was met by KMCH only.  

KICKUP - Informal observations of teachers are conducted and feedback on the observations are given as well as a rigor book study. 

 

Committee Member Davis:  Can the committee see the projections for the state test?  They give you proficiency but also tell you what you're projecting.

Chief Tate:  Will send the information out to the Committee Members.

 

  • 3rd Grade Commitment:  KIPP is committed to 3rd graders and KIPP wants to make sure our 3rd graders are ready to comprehend text when they're reading and ready to move to the next grade levels.
    • Reviewed the TN Education - Tennessee's Pathways to Promotion for 3rd & 4th Graders.  KIPP Possible at Risk Students are 35 out of 70 students.

Committee Chair Lyles Wallace:  Share with the committee the Tutoring Program/Schedule. 

Committee Member Davis:  How many children were retained last year?

Chief Tate:  Will share the information with the committee.

 

 

B.

Staff Perception Data

Chief Brooks presented and gave an overview of the following:

  • Insight Areas of Strength for KMPS with a comparison to KIPP National:  Professional Development, Instructional Planning for Student Growth, Academic Opportunity, Family and Community Engagement, and Peer Culture.
  • Insight Areas of Growth for KMPS with a comparison to KIPP National:  Learning Environment, School Operations, Leadership, Academic Opportunity
  • New Elementary School:  Application has been completed/submitted for a Performing Arts Elementary School.  The school will focus on creative and performing arts.
    • Applications start at K-2 and after the second year will expand to 3 and 4, and then by the 3rd year KIPP will expand to have K-5. 

Committee Member Davis would like to read the application for the new Charter School.

Strategic Priorities Update

Chief Tate and Chief Brooks presented and gave an update on the following:

Advanced Academic Updates

Chief Brooks presented and gave an update on the following:

  • KIPP Forward Match Updates
    • Seniors FAFSA:  48% Complete with FAFSA submissions from the Class of 25
    • Junior Events Upcoming
    • Junior Seminar class will participate in Black History celebrating HBCUs
  • KIPP Forward Persistence Updates
    • Received grade submissions from several students who achieved Dean's List honors.
    • Working with alumni from the Class of 2015 with their class reunion efforts and decision-day support.
    • Actively reaching out to maintain communications and provide necessary support.

Committee Chair Questions or Comments

Committee Chair Lyles-Wallace thanked the committee for the updates.  She wanted to recognize the work that has taken place with KMPS and that KMPS is leading in some areas as number 2.   It is exciting to hear about the good things that are happening with KMPS.  The committee needs to schedule some visits to get out and see the work that's being done, and learn how the committee can best support what's happening in the classroom.
