Call the Meeting to Order

S. Isabell called a meeting of the Academic Excellence Committee of KIPP Memphis Public Schools to order on Tuesday Sep 5, 2023 at 4:31 PM.

Approve Minutes

H. Coleman made a motion to approve the minutes from Academic Committee Meeting on 05-02-23.
M. Davis seconded the motion.
The committee VOTED unanimously to approve the motion.

II. Academic Excellence Presentation

TCAP/EOC Data

Chief Brooks gave an overview of the following:

  • TN Ready 2022-23 Goals vs Actuals: On Track & Mastery for KMCE, KMAM, KMCM and KMCH
  • KIPP Memphis ELA, Math, Science and Social Studies Performance - 4 Year TN Test Data for each school
  • KMPS TCAP Summary
  • KMPS Performance Highlights:  Highest Score for the (KIPP Memphis) region by content area
    • Performance Rank Among Other Charter Schools (31 total charter schools)
  • TVAAS Results showing growth data for KMCE, KMCM, KMAM and KMCH
  • Academic Goals 2023-2024
    • Success Rate for Elementary - 30%, Middle - 25% and High School - 20%
    • On-Track & Mastery
      • ELA & Math 3rd Grade - 32%  | ELA & Math 7th Grade - 32% | ALG1 & ENG1 9th Grade - 25%
    • Attendance and Cohort - Graduation Rate Seniors was 87%
  • Special Populations:  SPED, ESL and 504 for KMCE, MCM and KMCH 
  • Teacher Professional Learning:  All teachers received a Professional Learning Handbook.
  • Principal & New Teacher Professional Learning:  New Teacher Academy for all new teachers
  • C2EX:  Rigorous Instruction, College & Career Readiness, Affirming School Culture, Engaged Families and Community, Organizational Coherence.
  • Strategic Priority:  
    • Affirming School Culture:  For the Kingdom 9th Grade KIPPmersion team building event for the students
    • Organizational Coherence - Teacher Retention
    • Engaged Families & Community:  Parent Ambassador Program with Memphis Lift
    • Rigorous Instruction:  Dual Enrollment / Bethel University 
    • College & Career Readiness:  STEM Center of Excellence & STEM Partners, Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Code Crew
      1. KIPP Forward Class of 2023 exceeded set goals for matriculation in AA, CTE and Military and for the % of FAFSA submissions by the January 31st deadline.
      2. KIPP Forward Class of 2023 exceeded set goals for wishlist development and application submissions.
      3. KIPP Forward Strong Transition Goals
      4. KIPP Forward Class of 2022 exceeded the Spring Benchmark completion goal by 12 percentage points.
      5. KIPP Forward Class of 2021 met both the Fall and Spring BA Enrollment goals 
      6. KIPP Forward Bottoms Up Goals 2023-2024.
  • Upcoming Event:  College & Career Fair 2023, September 20th @ KMCH Gymnasium

Questions from Committee

Board Chair Davis:  For the Year 2027, those are the 9th graders now in the High School, are we setting ACT goals, are we focusing on the 9th graders now to make sure we are much higher by the time they are seniors?

 

Chief Brooks:  Yes, we are being very intentional with our 9th graders.

CEO Dr. Burt:  Yes, it is a requirement from the KIPP Foundation.

Introduction of Lin Johnson as a new Board Member and Joanna Belcher as a Academic Committee advisor.

 

Thanks to Chief Brooks for the presentation and want to continue to see and increase the growth and ride this wave of positivity because it's really about our kids.  Looking forward to seeing how us as a board member can continue to support.

V. CEO Comments

A.

Dr. Antonio Burt

Thank the all Board Members for one, giving up there time for the meeting and two, and supporting KIPP.  We welcome Board Members that would like to do school visits to get a feel of what is going on and be a thought partner.
