Call the Meeting to Order

J. Greenberg called a meeting of the board of directors of Beatrice Mayes Institute to order on Wednesday May 17, 2023 at 6:33 PM.

Reading of the Minutes

A. Berry, Ed.D. made a motion to approve the minutes from Board Meeting on 02-15-23.
B. Gilbert seconded the motion.
The board VOTED to approve the motion.

II. Superintendent Update

A.

Organizational Update

New Facility Construction:

  • Discussed importance of having a project manager to help make decisions on construction issues.
  • Buyer has been found to purchase middle school building. MS building needs to move to complete the road for the new school.
  • Overall, construction project is going well.

 

STAAR Testing:

  • Testing days were phenomenal, kids were handling the test very well.
  • Couple of internet outages due to internet provider.

 

Last Days of School:

  • May 26, 2023 is graduation...5:00pm K-5th grade, 6th-8th grade 7:00pm at Butler Stadium.
  • May 30, 2023 is the last day for teachers.
  • May 31, 2023, 12 leaders will go to Chicago for a leadership training. School tour, leadership training and strategic planning is planned for the trip. Return date is June 3, 2023. 

 

Updates:

 

  • Second City will come to Houston and train our faculty and staff on 8/8/23.
  • Proposing a board retreat for 8/19/2023. Working with our rep with Board on Track to plan retreat. Possibly planning to have a board meeting along with the retreat.

 

  • University of Houston Tutoring is ending for all charter except BMI. Chevron and U of H came to BMI for a tour and decided to keep working with BMI. The students of U of H are saying they want to be placed at BMI, tutors really enjoyed working with BMI.

 

  • State of Texas is backing off of truancy, leaving it in the hands of the schools. Parents are not complying.

 

  • We plan to have a beginning of the year meeting with parents to explain our expectations and standards.

 

  • Realigned ESSER to add on more teachers for growth. Pressing on hiring now so we can be prepared for new school year. We have 4 openings for teachers.

 

  • Our social media director is doing an amazing job. Managed to meet expectations without spending more money.

III. Academics

A.

Academic Excellence

  • Discussed consistency of having monthly meetings.
  • Vision of Academic excellence has shaped up.
  • Currently discussing high school curriculum.
  • Looking into student mental health app program for students.
  • Researching options of having a Guidance Counselor on campus.
  • Students need a way to express themselves so we are looking to create incentives to award good students.

 

Next Academic Excellence Meeting scheduled for 6/8/2023. Date and time may change.

Updated financials will be provided at the end of June 2023.
