Call the Meeting to Order

R. Caine called a meeting of the board of directors of Beatrice Mayes Institute to order on Wednesday Feb 15, 2023 at 6:37 PM.

Reading of the Minutes

G. Thomas made a motion to approve the minutes from WEEA Board Meeting on 01-26-23.
M. Taylor seconded the motion.
The board VOTED to approve the motion.

II. Superintendent Update

A.

Organizational Update

Black History Month

  • Students, faculty and staff had Royalty day.....Kings and Queens for a day.
  • Plan for Black History video about Wonderland is black history throughout the years on 2/24/23
  • Early dismissal on 2/24/23, using day as mental health day for teachers since we did not have a Black History Program.
  • The plan is to get back to performing a black history program when new school is built.

State Board of Education

  • State Board of Education Representative Stacy Childs wants to visit BMI - an African American school with STEAM program.

Donations

  • Positive movement towards funding.
  • Greater Houston Community Foundation will tour campus next month - March 28, 2023.
  • Second gift for $10,000 without visiting campus from Greater Houston Community Foundation.
  • Mark Gregg gave $125,000.
  • The plan is to have additional tours upcoming in the future.

Summer Program

  • Hype Freedom Schools - Reading Literacy Program -wants to use BMI Campus.
  • 50 slots at BMI available for Summer 2023.
  • Be a Bridge Foundation - meals for students after school - using for summer program for breakfast and lunch.
  • Hype Schools raises own funds for program with K-12 age range.
  • Paid internships for college students.
  • Restoration Community Center - would like to partner with BMI to work on Community Garden, work with Dads, parent involvement.

Children at Risk

  • Children at Risk - highlights under served kids - well known with data - BMI ranked at #8
  • in the city of Houston.
  • Houston Chronicle reporter reached out to BMI to interview us for an article. 

School Tours

  • For growth, BMI Administration started touring schools.
  • Toured Cristo Rey Jesuit, met with Administration.
  • BMI Administration attended the tour.
  • Discussed academics, enrollment, fund raising, etc.
  • March 21,2023 - will travel to Austin Achieve Academy in Austin for another tour. 

 

Mr. Mayes in new weekly schedule:

  • Monday - Academic meeting
  • Tuesday - Operations meetings
  • Wednesday - Thursday - Finance meeting
  • 3rd Wednesday - All Hands Meeting
  • Thursdays - Senior Leadership Meeting

 

EFF Closing Dinner

  • EFF closing dinner scheduled for Feb. 21, 2023  - Joe and Medina are requested to be present.
  • EFF Team will present a picture of the school as a gift.

Executive Session

  • The Board adjourned to executive session to discuss confidential matters regarding a student.

III. Finance

A.

Finance Committee

  • No current updates. Committee will provide update on financials for next board meeting.
  • First Bond payment was successful and finalized by bank today.
  • Audit is complete, confirmations were sent.
  • Beginning due diligence for new auditors. Plan to start process now.
  • Charter School Growth Fund is providing referrals for auditors.
  • Remy will provide update on fundraising plan at next Financial Committee Meeting.

  • Organizational websites need to be updated for compliance. Last updates were in 2019.
  • Certain links on website do not work.
  • Per C. Mayes, website will be updated soon.
