C. Edington called a meeting of the board of directors of AIMS K-12 College Prep Charter District to order on Tuesday Mar 16, 2021 at 6:34 PM.

A.

President's Report

Nothing to report at this time.

B.

Superintendent's Report

Superintendent made report.
  • OUSD will reopen on March 30, 2021.
  • The state requiring full funding to reopen on April 1, 2021 and as late as May 15, 2021 or AIMS will lose state funding.
  • AB/SB 86 provides funding for school to reopen to physical instruction.  Hybrid online and in-person learning for schools is accepted under AB/SB 86.
  • The only plan expressly requiring Board Approval is the AB/SB 86 Expanded Learning Opportunities Grant program expenditure plan.  May have to hold a special meeting when the grant is complete.
  • AIMS will provide the option for students to return to in-person learning.  Parents are not obligated to send their children to school.
  • AIMS will lose 1% of funding each day after April 1, 2021 if AIMS is no open for in-person instruction.
    • AIMS will not be eligible for any AB/SB 86 Expanded Learning Opportunities Grant funding if not open for in-person instruction by May 15, 2021.
  • Nothing in the bill or the applicable guidelines explicitly require either students or staff to submit to asymptomatic testing.
  • Tentative re-open dates for AIMS schools.
    • Elementary
      • Grades 4-5 - April 27, 2021.
      • Grades 2-3 - April 20, 2021.
      • Grades K-1 - April 15, 2021.

      • Grade 6 - To be determined.

AIMS K-12 Report

Christopher Ahmad presented AIMS Elementary School Report.

  • Conducting 2nd evaluation of AIMS Elementary school teachers.
  • AIMS Elementary School students will take the Smarter Balance Assessment Consortium (SBAC) test at the end of March.
  • Kamaria Lofton will be a special guest for AIMS Elementary School students during the Family Book Club event on March 18, 2021.
Peter Holmquist presented the AIMS Elementary School Report.

  • Working on the renewal of the Measure G1 grant.
  • Preparing to re-open.  Dates to be determine.
  • Conducting 3rd Distribution Day for school supplies and teacher packets from March 30 - April 1, 2021.
  • Additional Chromebooks for Students have been ordered.  No definitive date of delivery. 
    • Students do have a 1 to 1 ratio of Chromebooks to Students.
Maurice Williams presented the AIMS High School Report.

  • On Mental Health Friday's in March AIMS High School will offer Mental Health 101 Workshop on Friday, March 5, 2021 with Mr. Tom Thelen co-author of Mental Health 101 for Teens.
  • AIMS High School will induct 5 AIMS students to the first AIMS HS National Honor Society their names are:
    • Annie Chiu, Calvin Duong, Samantha Li, Faben Tesfazion, and Christopher Wali.
      • The second induction will in June 2021.
  • AIMS High School will begin their first virtual Boys and Girls Country Country Meet.
    • First meets are scheduled for March 15 - 20, 2021.
    • All meets and practices are held in accordance with COVID-19 standards.
  • AIMS High School is in evaluation Cycle 3: Reflection of Teaching Practice.

D.

ELD Report

Vannee Chand presented the English Language Development (ELD) report.

  • 75% of Summative English Learning Proficiency Assessment for California (ELPAC) -Remote testing complete.
    • ELPAC focuses on four areas: Speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
    • Competed test by school:
      • Elementary - 72
      • Middle School - 223
      • High School - 79
  • Progress monitoring primarily at AIMS High School
  • Tutoring session are focused on organizational skills to catch student's up on assignments.
  • Providing professional development for teachers for remote learning strategies.
  • Computer issues for students taking ELPAC test due to secure browsers.
    • Difficulties with students taking test at their respective campuses when they have computer issues.

 

E.

Education Coordinator, College Bound Kids Report

Mathew Gordon presented the Education Coordinator, College Bound Kids Report.

  • AIMS students have applied to over 81 colleges.
  • AIMS students have been accepted to over 28 colleges.
    • Some colleges have yet to release information of student acceptance.
  • AIMS students are reluctant to apply to out of state and private colleges.
  • AIMS High School students have applied for over 500 scholarships.

F.

Operations Report

S. Leung arrived at 7:45 PM.
Marisol Magaña presented the operations report.

  • Finalizing California Logistical Pupil Achievement Data Systems (CALPADS) Fall 2 report for all 3 AIMS schools. 
  • Responded to OUSD Preliminary offers for Prop 39.
  • Reviewing lunch service guidelines for school lunch services.
  • AIMS lottery was held on March 9th 2021.
    • In total AIMS accepted 308 student.
    • AIMS has 500 students on the waitlist in different grade levels.
      • 18 11th graders, 7 12th graders are on the waitlist for AIMS High School.
Tiffany Tung presented the attendance report for all AIMS schools.
  • Percentage of attendance from March 1 - March 11, 2021
    • Elementary - 98.96%
    • Middle School - 98.1%
    • High School - 98.0%

Student Bathroom Upgrades for American Indian Public High School

  • Awaiting response from OUSD personnel to proceed with bathroom renovations. 
  • Marisol Magaña presented item III.B. Student Bathroom Upgrades.

    • Negotiating a 2 year lease for the High School campus under prop 39.
    • The upgrades to the bathrooms is one of many upgrades needed at the High School campus.

Letterman Jackets for AIMS High School Seniors

C. Edington made a motion to Approve item III.D. Letterman Jackets for AIMS High School Seniors.
D. Lang seconded the motion.
The board VOTED unanimously to approve the motion.

E.

AIMS Board Resolution - The AIMS Classroom | Rooted in Courageous Community and Engaged with the World.

  • Director Cook amended item III.E. to include Director Leung as a sponsor.
  • Director Cook amended item III.E. to include: 
    • Whereas, AIMS Board of Directors, believes that the K-12 learning environment must integrate the contributions of people of color throughout the academic year. This includes, but not limited to, the contributions of the AAPI community to the math and sciences, social studies, language arts, humanities and the arts,
  • The revised resolution can be found in the documents submitted.
  • Director Cook presented item III.E. AIMS Board Resolution - The AIMS Classroom | Rooted in Courageous Community and Engaged with the World.
    • President Edington asked the superintendent to address the implementation strategies/tasks pertinent to the implementation of the resolution in her monthly reports.
C. Edington made a motion to Approve item III.E. AIMS Resolution - The AIMS Classroom | Rooted in Courageous Community and Engaged with the World as amended.
D. Lang seconded the motion.
The board VOTED unanimously to approve the motion.
