  F. Draft of Land Acknowledgement to Board of Directors Discuss Marco Menendez 10 m

LONG VERSION:

"We begin by acknowledging that we are gathered on the ancestral, unceded territory of the Confederated Villages of Lisjan of the Ohlone people, the first stewards of the land now known as the Oakland and greater Bay Area. We honor their enduring connection to this land, and we recognize that it was cared for and sustained by Indigenous peoples long before the establishment of publicly funded schools or charter systems.

Founded in 1996 by Native American families seeking to preserve their cultural heritage and community through education, AIMS K-12 College Prep carries a legacy deeply rooted in commitment to equity, inclusion, and opportunity. From our beginnings as the American Indian Public Charter School through our expansion into middle, high school, and K–8 campuses, our work has been shaped by generations of families who believed in educational excellence as a path to empowerment.

We acknowledge that the benefits this community derives from its presence here are made possible through histories that include displacement, colonization, and inequity. Acknowledging this history is not merely symbolic—it is a step toward truth, reconciliation, and meaningful action.

We recognize the ongoing presence, resilience, and contributions of Native peoples past and present—including those whose families continue to live in this region, and we commit to honoring that legacy through genuine partnerships, inclusion, and reflection. As an educational community, we understand that this acknowledgment is a beginning, not an endpoint: it calls us to deepen our learning, build authentic relationships, and support Indigenous voices and leadership in tangible ways.

May this statement guide us to live and work in greater awareness of the history that shapes these lands and to pursue justice, equity, and belonging for all."

SHORTER VERSION:

"We acknowledge that we are gathered on the ancestral, unceded land of the Ohlone people, specifically the Confederated Villages of Lisjan, who have stewarded this land since time immemorial.

Founded by Native American families seeking to preserve cultural connection through education, AIMS carries a responsibility to honor Indigenous histories and living communities. This acknowledgement is a step toward reflection, learning, and action, and a reminder of our commitment to equity, respect, and shared responsibility."

SHORTEST VERSION:

"We acknowledge that we are meeting on the ancestral land of the Ohlone people, specifically the Confederated Villages of Lisjan. We honor their enduring presence and commit ourselves to learning, reflection, and action rooted in equity and respect."
