Call the Meeting to Order

C. Cuellar-Lezcano called a meeting of the Academic Committee Committee of The New American Academy Charter School to order on Tuesday Jun 11, 2024 at 3:04 PM.

II. EOY Data Review

A.

EOY data

EOY MATH DATA

All grades were in the low performance/high growth quadrant.

Students made more growth than last year

Domains - comparison

grown in all areas - the lowest continues to be in geometry but still showed growth from last year

Sheila - was surprised that we saw the growth that we did in NO and ALG

Dr. Babb - students were getting higher curriculum as iready adjusted; iready levels up; how do we give them more targeted topics for those areas they made need; Paloma with story problems - wonder if...coaching points were in such different places; not all started on the same levels; can predict that this structure will continue to  grow

Something to note: We have more 1st graders than last year;

Math by grade:

Gr K - 82% at or above grade level; none in red tiers

Gr 1 - 37% at or above; biggest group was in the yellow tier (went down from last year)

Gr 2 - 54% at or above; (went up from 40-->54)

Gr 3 - 70% at or above (went up from 42--> 70)

Gr 4 - 68% at or above (went up from 54-->68)

Gr 5 - 52% at or above (went down from 56-->52)

Growth data - 128% median growth rate (typical growth)

Do we see this as a product of Lavinia coaching?

Sheila - coaching is not in a vacuum; application across to other areas - such as classroom discussion; hold fidelity to pacing calendar; doing work on how to give the diagnostics

Dr. Babb - we've done a good job about putting ELA interventions; how can we put those systems in place for math;

Jenny - data next year will be more telling; last year math interventions happened during after school; half the numbers serviced this year; staffing was tricky; grouping feels more tricky than ELA groupings

We want 100% typical growth - across the board we are not seeing that; some grades are not getting to their stretch growth not just their typical growth; kids who are behind; improved the median but we want to see everyone's improvement in tiers (going from one color/level to another)

While we saw the median growth rate in typical growth reach over 100%, and many grade levels went up from last year, we still want to make sure that stretch growth is what we look out for.  We want stretch growth to be as close to 100% as possible.  Highest was 4th grade at 48%; lowest was 5th grade at 24%.  But this grew from last year (Highest was 3rd grade with 38% and lowest was Gr K at 9%)

Reading EOY Data

4 grades were high performance, high growth; K and 1 were in low performance/high growth

increased our green tiers while lessening the red tiers from last year

Components:

PA - decreased the red tiers, but gained in yellow to lessen the green tiers

Dr. Babb:

MLL - improvement for high frequency words in this group

Jenny will add the data for MLL and SWD

less double strike reds this year

Jenny - we have to pay attention to the yellows; otherwise, they have the potential to widen the gap as they move up in grades

Sheila - happy to see improvement in comprehension

Dr. Babb - 2nd grade - skills texts for small group instruction; want to leverage the skills and knowledge blocks in small groups

Note from Jenny

4th diagnostic - when more tests are administered, that skews the numbers and data

Median typical growth - all median scores in all grades were above 100%; stretch growth needs to continue to grow and get closer to 100%

We looked at 2 grades (Gr K and Gr 1)

-Gr k --> 16 kids had PSF scores in the red

-Gr 1 --> 19 kids had LNF scoresin the red; Sheila will check student scores

                 13 kids had PSF scores in the red

Sheila - we need to recalibrate how to administer the NWF assessments and how to score on the iPads

Other noticing - classroom management and routines are crucial in grades K and 1 so that there is more small group instruction; more TA's scheduled consistently during this time

Questions to think about for next year:

-How do we support our K and 1 to do very well and then they carry it forward

K-2 curriculum - skills and knowledge block separately

-How do we set up an intervention system like we have for reading?

-How can we monitor typical growth? (this comes after 2nd diagnostic; at this point they should be at 50% typical growth)

-How do we leverage what 2nd grade team has done? Can we video tape their data chats with students? What questions are they asking? How do students get to set their own goals?

Dr. Babb talked about how Paloma shifted her own thinking about how to have students set their daily goals.  If you want to score a __, then you need to get ___correct.

-2nd/3rd grade teams hit their usage goals -- how do we others to do the same?

-What's the follow-up from Jenny's data share to them taking and following through on action?

-How do we get kids to do their best on 1st diagnostic to set appropriate level from the get-go?

-How do we access more of the small group instruction lessons from mClass? There's alot for teachers to manage.

-Can we also access other ways to assess reading - beyond Acadience?
