Call the Meeting to Order

D. Dula called a meeting of the board of directors of The New American Academy Charter School to order on Thursday May 21, 2026 at 5:00 PM.

Approve Minutes

C. Kelly made a motion to approve the minutes from TNAACS Board Meeting on 04-23-26.
F. Monrose seconded the motion.
The board VOTED to approve the motion.

II. Finance & Data

A.

Monthly Financials

Elaine Schmiedshoff from CSBM shared our monthly financials from April 2026. It was reported that TNAACS has 130 days of cash on hand. Elaines shared there were few changes from the previous month in revenue. Biggest change was an open position that was being held in the budget has been removed, since it is not anticipated that a teacher will be hired for that position before the end of the school year. In addition the legal fe projection was adjusted.  As a result of these adjustments TNAACS's bottom line has improved.

TNAACS Data Share

Jenny Trani shared current enrollment data with the board. The objective was to share current enrollment projections for 2025/2026 and the steps being taken to increase enrollment. We took a look at whsat enrollment has been like at TNNACS across the past several years i May. Currently we are at a projected enrollment of 247 students. While there was a sharp decline in enrollment in 2022, we have been working to stabilize an d increase enrollment since then. Our ultimate goal is an enrollment of 285.

 

We currently have 200 returning students (w/o Kindergarten)We have 86 viable applicants, 20 completed registrations and 25 registrations in progress. This is slightly higher than last year, with most applicants applying for Kindergarten. 

 

Plans to increase enrollment include:

  • Vanguard postcard mailings in July and August
  • Bus shelter ads
  • Social media posts
  • Continuing our "Getting Ready for Kindergarten" workshops
  • Summer school tours
  • Free uniforms for registration by June 6th
  • Canvassing by Underdog

III. Governance

A.

Academic Excellence Committee

C. Cuellar shared that at their last committee meeting the team discussed how students are articulating their thinking about math, utilizing a rubric shared by our Vice Chair. The DTLs will be doing a crosswalk between the rubric and the work the school has been doing with our Lavinia coach. The DTLs will share this at the next Academic Excellence Committee Meeting.

TNAACS 2025-2026 Site Visit Check-in Memo

Lisa Silva reviewed data from the NYSED Check In site Visit Memo. She shared that for Benchmark 1 - Student Performance, J. Marshall our liason cited notable progress in student achievement, including the following:

 

ELA NYS Exam Data

  • ELA All
    • Proficiency rate increased 27% from 2024( 48%) to 2025 (75%)
    • This is 16% above the District of Location (DOL)
    • This is 20% above NYS
  • SWD ELA
    • 19% above our DOL
    • 27% above NYS
  • Econ Dis ELA
    • 15%  above DOL
    • 26% above NYS

Math NYS Exam Data:

  • Math All
    • Proficiency rate increased 7% from 2024 (63%0 to 2025 ( 70%)
    • This is 6% above the DOL
    • This is 12% above NYS
  • SWD Math
    • 26% above the DOL
    • 31% above NYS
  • Econ Dis
    • 4% above DOL
    • 18% above NYS

Science Exam Data

  • Fifth Grade Science Exam
    • Proficiency rate declined 6% from 2024 (36%) to 2025 (30%)
    • This is 3% lower than our DOL
  • SWD
    • Proficiency rate of 36%
    • This is 20% above our DOL
    • This is 15% above NYS


It was also noted that staff survey data about the school was very positive. 

 

The memo also noted that while making efforts, TNAACS still needs to improve in Benchmark 9 - Enrollment, Recruitment & Retention. Currently, TNAACS continues to enroll below 85% of its contracted enrollment, with overall enrollment at 75% for the 2024-2025 school year.

 

Finally, the memo cited improvement in Benchmark 10 - Legal Compliance. Based on the 2024-2025 Staff Roster submitted with the Annual Report, the CSO was able to verify fingerprint clearance for all employees. The school’s action plan describes the establishment of a hiring process that ensures prospective staff receive fingerprint clearance before being hired.

L. Silva shared with board member that the Annual Report Board Trustee Financial Disclosure forms need to be completed by every board member and should be sent to Lisa by June 16th.
