Call the Meeting to Order

M. Rosenthal called a meeting of the board of trustees of Inwood Academy for Leadership Charter School to order on Tuesday Feb 13, 2024 at 7:05 PM.

Approve Minutes

K. Mangual made a motion to approve the minutes from January Board of Trustees Meeting on 01-16-24.
K. Smith seconded the motion.
The board VOTED to approve the motion.

II. Board Committee Reports

A.

CCS Presentation

Simone Smith, Director of College & Career Success ("CCS"), presented the CCS report:

 

CCS counsels with a tiered approach in order to cater to the diverse needs of the student body. 

  • So far, CCS has had 1,600 meetings which has helped tremendously support the academic success of many students.  
  • CCS also has many programming events throughout the year; so far,
    • 12 college representative visits
    • 2 college application night
    • 2 college trips 
    • 3 Parent workshops
    • Alumni Week

College Applications: 

  • Over 1,400 applications submitted 
  • More than 301 acceptances so far; not including CUNY 
  • 4.8 Million in scholarships 

Financial Aid:

  • Applications opened 2 months late this year; opened in December
    • Information on funds, aid packages, and further details will be released by March 
    • Nationwide delay due to many changes the financial aid applications are undergoing

New Partnership:

  • CARA partnership
    • Helping with maintaining a uniform curriculum for the college and career readiness class
      • This curriculum is aimed at establishing an infrastructure that fosters a supportive culture of post secondary access. 
      • Their primary goal is to equip first generation college students, low-income, and students of color with all the tools to succeed 
      • This curriculum provides training and professional development for staff on navigating the post-secondary world and addressing challenges faced by first generation college college students.

Spring event lineup:

  • Parent workshops; in conjunction with Cara
    • They assisted CCS with coming up with a parent series 
      • 4 will be held throughout the year 
  • 5 college tours 
  • I Decided Day

Hazel Torres, Alumni Manager, presented the following:

Alumni Week:

  • Alumni come back to IAL
    • Teachers get to see their students again 
      • Catch up on life and academic goals/progression

College Fair:

  • Total success this year
    • Multiple colleges/universities and 12 different organizations were able to share about college support 

College and Career Enrollment for Class of 2023: 

  • 73.7% of this cohort are enrolled in a 2-yr or 4 yr college 
  • 3 students have enrolled into the Military 
  • 4 students have enrolled into trade school 

B.

Facilities and Finance Report

Lottery:

  • IAL has been targeting the Inwood neighborhood, neighboring neighborhoods, Fordham area, and Kingsbridge for students and families. 
  • 128 ELL applications; 32% of the total applications received
