Call the Meeting to Order

M. Rosenthal called a meeting of the board of trustees of Inwood Academy for Leadership Charter School to order on Tuesday Sep 19, 2023 at 7:11 PM.

Approve Minutes

Motion to approve the minutes from August Board of Trustees Meeting on 08-15-23.
The board VOTED unanimously to approve the motion.

II. Board Committee Reports

CEO report

The board interviewed a potential Board Candidate. 

 

Updates:

  • Orientation Week was great this year

Upcoming Events:

  • Board Breakfast- Nov 7th at 7:30AM
  • Roots & Recipes
    • Staff and families bring food and we have judges choose the best dishes
    • Board members are welcomed to attend 

School Wide Goals

  • Becoming HRS Certified Levels 1-3 by June 2025
    • The first school in NYC to receive certification 
  • Successfully launching the elementary school by August 2024
  • Earn a five-year renewal by June 2025

 

School Wide Goals:

  • Academics:
    • NYS Exams - Math +18%, ELA - +2%
    • Algebra 1 Regents +30%, English Regents +10%
  • 80% of students in grades 5 - 12 in reading intervention programs (Just Words and Wilson) will meet end of year benchmarks (Just Words) or increase their score by 30% (Wilson)
    • Just Words is a course on its own 
      • Whole School average- 81%
        • You have to have 80 or above on the unit to move on 
      • Many students on average scored 80% or above on their end of unit assessments which allowed them to move to the next step. 
      • About 50% of the students in Wilson were able to complete the first Step in the program. 
      • We increased instructional days from 4 days a week to 5 days a week for reading intervention programs
      • Looking Ahead:
        • Elimination of the Wednesday half days allows for an extra day of reading intervention. 
        • Provision of more homogenous reading intervention groupings - a more personalized schedule for all MS students to address reading gaps 

Culture

 

  • HS and MS has kicked off with a primary focus around Social Emotional Learning. 
    • 1 to 2 days per/week of advisory is dedicated to academic and behavioral advising along with student goal setting. 
  • MS & HS increased their use of the Kickboard platform to report positive and negative interactions. 
    • Teachers didn’t always understand how to log incidents into Kickboard correctly. 
    • Moving forward we will have a SY 23-24 suspension goal
  • 70% of students will say that students never or rarely harass, bully or intimidate other students.
    • IAL students responded more favorably than the district in most grades. 
    • 10th grade was an anomaly, and we are investigating the outcome of this data.
