CEO Report

CEO, J. Scalice, went over CEO report.

Teachers have been using LUMOS for ELA and Math testing. Currently the school has seen growth in Math and ELA. Math score was on par with the state of about 3-5%.

  • Our target is looking for 3-5% of growth each year.

Commissioners Network presentation will be given to the subcommittee on May 15th. This will determine if we will pass our presentation to the full board in June.

C. Sneed made a statement that the school has made wonderful growth since J. Scalice and L. Hubbard came on board. In its infancy the school has had some challenges but the leadership team has made great progress with very little means. But there is always going to be that shortfall even with additional funding. One of the solutions is to entertain at some point and explore a K-5 model.

J. Scalice will go over budget for personnel, look at comparatives from last year and what our budget will look like next school year.

COO Report

L. Hubbard went over COO report.

Enrollment update:

  • L. Hubbard states we have 177 applications for admission which is almost 60% higher than the amount of applications we had last year.
  • The school had its first lottery last week and we are now filled in all grades except 6th and 7th grade. Our recruitment efforts are focused on those two classes.

Security Grant update:

  • We were awarded about $95,219 a couple of years ago through the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection and a portion of that money went to cover some of the storefront project in our High School area. We have until September 2025 to spend the money.

We had closed the school one day and had an early dismissal as well because of a foul smell in the school. It was due to the exhaust pipes on the roof that was returning air back into the School that had odors from the local sewer pipes. The solution is that the building owners will be extending the exhaust pipes on the roof. The parts have been ordered and will be in next week. The owners will complete the project by end of May at no cost to the school.

B. Carlson asked how much does it cost to the school if we close for a day. The only way this costs the school Is that we have to add another day to the end of the school year. This means that we would need to get bussing and that may cost us.

HR update:

All offer letters have been sent out to all returning staff. It is Teacher Appreciation week including personalized Great Oaks Gifts and Crumbl Cookies for everyone. It is also Nurse Appreciation week and so we were able to do some nice things for our Nurse.

Each year the board has to vote around our Healthy Food Options through the Child Nutrition Program through the State of CT. This will be presented tonight at the Board Meeting.
