Call the Meeting to Order

T. Hanmer called a meeting of the Academic Policy Committee of Brighter Choice Charter Schools to order on Thursday Apr 11, 2019 at 8:47 AM.

Approve Minutes from the March 7, 2018 Academic Committee meeting

M. Snyder made a motion to approve minutes from the Academic Committee Meeting on 03-07-19 Academic Committee Meeting on 03-07-19.
S. Wallace seconded the motion.
The committee VOTED unanimously to approve the motion.

II. Academic Policy

A.

BCCSG Principal’s report and school update

K. Ford presented:
  • Current Enrollment - 4 pupils under budgeted number
  • Re-registration - Number of re-registrations lower than desired.
    • Families are being reminded that re-registration is required to reserve a spot for the 2019-2020 school year.
  • Staffing - one new AIS teacher started recently.
  • Interim Assessment #2 results
    • Largest take-away: One area in which the scholars need to improve is understanding and solving word problems. She plans to develop a school-wide strategy to address this area.
  • Proposed Staffing Model for 2019-2020.
    • This will be discussed in more detail at the next Academic Committee meeting and as part of the 2019-2020 budget creation process.
  • Upcoming:
    • Work with the Albany Charter School Network to develop in school Math assessments
    • K. Ford and a few teachers will visit a school using Cognitive Guided Math Instruction to learn more about this approach.
    • Smartboard trails
    • Summer Academic Program
      • 15 students from each incoming grade level 2 - 5.
      • Monday through Thursday mornings.
      • 7/15 - 8/8/19

BCCSB Principal’s report and school update

K. Mclean presented:
  • Current Enrollment - 3 pupils above budgeted number
  • Re-registration - Number of re-registrations lower than desired.
    • Families are being reminded that re-registration is required to reserve a spot for the 2019-2020 school year.
  • Summer Academic Program
    • 15 students from each incoming grade level 2 - 5.
    • Monday through Thursday mornings.
    • 7/15 - 8/8/19
  • Summer Enrichment packet will go home with each scholar.
    • It is mandatory to complete and return in September.
    • This work will be a portion of scholars' T1 final grades.
  • Results of a recent Staff Survey
    • Largest take-aways teachers want changes to scheduling (more prep and collaboration time) and more staff
  • Proposed Staffing Model for 2019-2020.
    • This will be discussed in more detail at the next Academic Committee meeting and as part of the 2019-2020 budget creation process.

M. Snyder will reach out to suggested schools to discuss potential visits.

Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan, Assemblymember Patricia Fahey and Senator Neil Breslin all identified as people whom can be invited to visit the schools.

T. Hanmer made a motion to adjourn the meeting.
M. Snyder seconded the motion.
The committee VOTED unanimously to approve the motion.
There being no further business to be transacted, and upon motion duly made, seconded and approved, the meeting was adjourned at 9:56 AM.
