Edison School of the Arts Mission is to continue to be an educational and artful resource for all students, parents, community, and staff members by consistent and focused professional development, invitational practices by all, utilizing quarterly and annual reviews.  We will continue to develop our educational and arts aesthetic by expanding our arts experiences, exposure, and partnerships

Edison School of the Arts Vision is to provide an environment that promotes high academic and creative achievement through implementation of visual and performing arts course programming. We encourage students to become responsible citizens who are culturally diverse. We develop lifelong learners, appreciators, and consumers of the arts.

Call the Meeting to Order

K. Marshall called a meeting of the Academic Excellence Committee of Edison School of the Arts to order on Tuesday Sep 17, 2019 at 4:49 PM.

Adoption of the Agenda

K. Marshall made a motion to accept the agenda.
A. Berns seconded the motion.
The committee VOTED unanimously to approve the motion.

II. Academic Excellence

A.

ILEARN

ILEARN Data
  • 29.3% of students passed the ELA portion of the test. 
  • 25.6% of students passed the Math portion of the test. 
  • Top 9 in the district for ELA out of 63 schools. 
  • Top 15 in the district for Math out of 63 schools.
Teacher Recognition
  • K. Marshall recommended A. Berns to provide weekly positive feedback to teachers.
    • Example: A weekly best practice email pertaining to culture and academics that recognizes positive teaching strategies. 
  • C. Nolan recommended a peer walk for teachers to observe each others instruction within their classroom.
    • Teacher's specific skillsets will be highlighted and recommended for observation. 
  • Edison received feedback from a survey that was conducted to access student culture. 
    • Kevin Sterrett, Social Worker, recommended that staff conduct student interviews to encourage relationship building. 
    • The staff recommended creating student ambassadors that will serve as leaders to the student body. 
Upcoming Assessments
  • AIRWays fall interim will be taken by k-8th grade students from September 23rd - October 4th.
  • IREAD-3 practice test 2 will be administered the week of October 21st.
  • PSAT will be taken by the 8th grade students on October 30th.
Assessment Planning
  • K. Marshall recommended reporting how Edison is using the interim data to access student growth on future academic dashboards. 
    • Individual grade level assessment calendars 
      • Benchmarks
      • Curriculum materials 
    • K. Marshall encouraged using the assessment calendar for ILEARN planning.  
      • During the next professional development training, have teachers engage in the practice test. 

B.

Discipline

  • Out of school suspensions are down by 73% compared to last school year. 
    • The results are due to teachers applying restorative practices within their behavior management strategies. 
    • The behavior adjustment facilitators have been assisting with student to student and student to teacher communication to help build a positive school culture.  
    • The 5th-6th grade teachers have been applying Dojo system to recognize positive student behavior. 
    • Student achievement is recognized through  Superrrr B Cool Cats nominations.

Policy Updates

Student and Staff Culture Assessment 
  • K. Marshall recommended using the Relay culture rubric to assess student culture.

  • Instruction Partners completed an instructional audit.
  • The attached academic dashboard board includes data on performance change vs. poverty in academic areas of math and ELA.
