III. CAO Updates

A.

School Calendar

CAO Andrew McRae reviewed the calendar and supporting documents.

Summary of key changes:

  • Increase to the number of instructional days
  • Reduction to the number of Professional Development days
  • Longer school year (start earlier, end later)

We are trading a longer school day for longer school year. This shift provides protected time built in after school for professional development.

Every other Friday PD has been difficult for working families. This schedule will also allow for more just-in-time training for teachers and staff.

We recognize that we will need to address after school care for families and opportunities for scholars, and we are in conversation with our partners who offer these services.

There are specific requirements we have to meet by ODE and Community School standards, which also factored into planning the SY23-24 calendar.

This calendar allowed us to keep summer break, fall break, spring break and holidays in tact.

The board suggested that the end of trimester days not be shaded in color on the calendar. It could lead families to think school is not in session that day.

The calendar release for families is part of a broader strategy for onboarding our new families. We have not yet determined how we will share with existing families. Feedback from Parent Advisory Committee is to give them as much notice as possible.
