Amy
● Disclosure: Funded by Amy’s organization.
● Amy’s thoughts:
○ Youth engagement vs empowerment
■ Youths as agents of change
○ Report provided insights on how to make a truly trauma informed school. Amy’s Thoughts:
■ Confidentiality, safety and trust are key
■ How do students and parents/adults feel connected to the school
■ Fine line of confidentiality (trust vs safety)
■ Stigmas against:
● Immigration status
● poverty
● LGBTQIA +
■ Importance of providing healing for the staff. If the staff is not healthy, they are not good for kids
■ What do students want vs what behaviors adults want to suppress
■ Kids and families that are struggling the most are the least likely to engage
■ Great observations for the board to consider when making policy decisions.
● Carole’s Thougts:
○ A theme that kept coming up was “inclusiveness”
■ What does it take to put some of these ideas in place?
Final thoughts:
The authors of this report are excellent resources.

Future Meeting and Agenda Information
Notes: Next Meeting Wednesday, October 25 th
at 5 pm. NOTE THE DATE CHANGE DUE TO THE
BOARD MEETING DATE CHANGE.
Framing Thought: The Board and committees focus on results, and the school leadership
focuses on the means to get results. This is the primary difference between governance and
management. We serve as a strategic thinking partner to the ED and Instructional Leadership
team specifically in the area of the academic and social-emotional success of students.
Notes:
● Carole:
○ 1. Strategic Partners - we are not a decision maker
■ Per Randy: We are part of the Brown Act. Stakes are low under the Brown Act.
○ As a board we are accountable for showing student success as measured by the district, county,
state.
○ Board Committee members and the SSC’s responsibility is to educate the board and to
support agreed on recommendations in support of student success. Board members
on the SSC should be able to speak to the board about the recommendations and support
the leadership decisions.
● Amy - The definition of student success should be easily understood and explained by all members of the school Board and community.
● Randy – What this committee can do for the senior staff is to provide an informal place where issues can be brought up, discussed, and agreed on prior to recommending to the board. This is an efficiency measure. Ideally, the full board should be able to agree with the committee’s recommendations.
