Directors Report

General updates:

  • First week of school was busy, but went generally well.   Many positive comments indicated that we are way ahead of where we were at this time last year.   Covid protocols were tough last year, keeping families away.  A lot of involvement and engagement from families as we start up.  ‘Veteran’ families stepping up and helping during DO/PU and acting as ambassadors for new families.
  • Moral and attitude around the school is positive.  Teaching teams are volunteering (on their own) to bring lunch/snacks for the rest.  Teachers are very pleased with PTO and all their doing to support them. Seems to be more of a team atmosphere as we see teachers collaborating during their prep times.  Perla’s masters schedule magic is working.

Academic Excellence

  • Science Curriculum:   We have been using an outdated K-8 science Curriculum (Fusion).   Materials are in English and Spanish, but incomplete from use over the years.  Teachers have reported it has solid science content, but is difficult to follow a sequence and a bit disjointed for state standards.  Also, seems more appropriate for 6-8.  We haven’t given teachers recent training on it because they’re not interested in it and piecing together their own instruction to meet standards.    3rd grade piloted a science program last year HMH Arriba las Ciencias, and felt it was a good fit for Arco.   This is a Houghton Mifflin (Harcourt) product.    End of last year, the Leadership team decided to implement it this year.   This is specifically a K-5 program, that comes with leveled readers, T guides, and materials/activity kits.  Curriculum/materials in Spanish. Start with 3rd grade (Bueno, Martin, Falcon).   They will use this throughout this 2022-23 school year, and then reassess if we will implement it for all K-5.   Initial training for our full year pilot teachers (3rd) on 9/28.
  • RAZ Plus.  1 year (16 classes)    Virtual reading libraries for grades K-5.  English and Spanish.
  • Easy CBM testing has started.  (Fall diagnostic data for Eng/Span reading, and in mathematics.)    We will repeat in winter, then spring.

Staff Training and Retention

  • In-service week (8/29-9/2) was very productive. We took the takeaways from last year and improved on them.  Teaching teams were working well together to plan and align their practices.
  • Recent IA resignation.  Have found a replacement already, who has lots of experience
  •  ½ coach ½ substitute position is working out fabulous.  This is a great improvement over last year, so we will continue to budget for it. Position has been supporting 1st grade (a little in Kinder) as well.  Very well received.  Has started gradual release and begun supporting with coaching K-5 how to run small groups for intervention.  She will also be supporting with intervention groups (English and Spanish).
    •  Recruiting to fill 1/2 coach, 1/2 sub position, which will be vacant in January 2023.  This will primarily be a substitute and intervention support role for the remainder of 2022-23.  We have three (3) qualified candidates from Peru and Ecuador.  We’ll complete the interview/selection process by mid October.  Our advantage  is they end their school year in January, so a mid-year transition may end up working out.
  • 2023-24 plan…Implement Teacher On Special Assignment (TOSA) positions- Temporary Job assignments/exchanges within Arco Iris.   We have staff who will need to complete teacher prep programs -and- gain solid experience in full-time teaching roles in order to set them in motion of permanent administrative roles with our school.  We are projecting that we would start a few job ‘exchanges’ next year (2023-24) to build up our leadership capacity and potential of our current staff.  This plan includes an ‘instructional coach’ in some capacity.
  • J-1’s (International Exchange Teachers) seem to give us a bit of an advantage for staffing.   However, the extra work that comes with them is time/resource exhausting.  Our current admin staff can’t sustain it alone…it’s too much.   Exploring options to outsource the work, restructuring administrative positions to take on these duties.
  • Still have 7 IA position.  Still looking at getting 1 more (total of 8) and then reassess.

Community Engagement and Positive School Culture

  • Beaverton Parade on 9/10… lots of happy families.  Many thanks to Mario for all his work.
  • Back to School on 9/20  (K-2) and 9/22 (3-8).   6-8pm.
    • 3 sessions---families get schedule when they arrive, based on grade level and last name.  Bring your student!  More details will be sent out in Friday's Director's report.
  • Familias Unidas to start up in October.   Mix of day/evening/in-person/virtual depending on # of attendees.   (limited space in the building)
  • BTBD- we are maxed out now.  AM: 53    PM:68   Staff of 4 starting at 3:30p.   (3 at 4:15-5:15p) (2 at 5:15p-5:45p) (1 at 5:45-6:00p).  We can’t take anymore until we secure another IA to support so stopped enrollment.  Many families are asking about it.
