Culture
Brenda Edwards presented behavioral data from August 17 – October 1, 2025, including 60 classroom disruptions, several fights among middle school students, and 10 bullying incidents. She highlighted the proactive work of the new social worker, who has already supported multiple students and teachers, resulting in only four referrals since the start of the year.
Attendance data showed a 98.22% average daily attendance rate, with eight students identified as chronically absent — primarily due to transportation challenges. Counselors are addressing these cases individually. The sensory room is scheduled to open on October 14, and additional behavioral data will be shared at the next committee meeting.
The committee discussed broader student support and culture initiatives. Nurse Brian was commended for effectively managing minor medical needs to keep students in class. Mr. Adside’s return to the ISS program has positively impacted hallway transitions, especially in middle school. Shirlynn Kelly proposed involving local pastors and faith leaders to assist with discipline efforts, an idea Barry Williams supported, noting plans for all-male and all-female assemblies to address behavior issues. Brenda confirmed that Pastor Adside and other volunteers are eager to complete the necessary paperwork to support ISS and the sensory room.

Curriculum Update
Nisah Brinson presented a comprehensive curriculum update focused on addressing literacy concerns and aligning instruction with evolving Georgia Milestones expectations. Key components include the adoption of a standards-aligned reading curriculum, integration of multimodal literacy into instruction and assessments, and expanded teacher training and support through Amplify.
The committee discussed upcoming changes to the Milestones assessment — including a heavier emphasis on writing techniques and analysis of multimodal texts — and how instructional strategies must adapt. Efforts to enhance student engagement through diverse text selections were also reviewed. Nisah confirmed that a full reading plan with specific goals and action steps will be presented at the next Academic Committee meeting. Nisah will also review what academic data would be most pertinent to share with the committee at the request of Chair Finley.
Diane Freeman presented preliminary CCRPI results, noting declines in literacy performance while highlighting gains in math and science, particularly in middle school. Committee members expressed concern about literacy outcomes, prompting a discussion of intervention strategies. Diane confirmed the implementation of a new literacy plan designed to reverse current trends and responded to questions about the school’s overall score and percentile ranking.
The committee reviewed the Comprehensive Literacy Improvement Plan, which includes adopting a new reading curriculum, reintroducing novels to build reading stamina, incorporating cursive writing, and starting targeted reading interventions before January. Additional ideas included organizing teacher workshops focused on new literacy standards, recruiting community volunteers to read with students, and researching best practices from top-performing Georgia schools. Weekly planning meetings will continue to refine the literacy strategy, with reading designated as the school’s top academic priority.
Diane also provided an update on assessment practices. Teachers have submitted grades for the 9-week period, which are being used for FTE validation. Data on reading, Amplify usage, science, and social studies performance will be shared at the next meeting. The committee established a goal of 10% growth in literacy scores from fall to winter testing. Plans are underway to introduce interim assessments (DRC Beacon and Common Core) between MAP testing windows, and weekly formative and common assessments will be reported for Title I schools. Diane also noted the need to finalize CPI teacher certification data by October 28, linking certification status directly to funding and academic performance outcomes.
