Interviews Questions

  1. How would your experience and skills complement our Board?
  2. What do you know and understand about Charter Schools?
  3. How might you advocate for the school publicly and privately? Why might you want to support FRCS?
  4. What are your thoughts regarding holding all scholars to college preparatory standards? For example, scholars who are identified as English Learners, scholars identified as special education, scholars identified as low income.
  5. Working on a Board requires close teamwork among a group that is likely to bring diverse backgrounds, experiences, and different points of view. When there is discussion and disagreement regarding a decision, and the Board comes to a conclusion that you don't agree with, how would you proceed?

Interview: Board of Trustees Candidate Sebastian Corbat

Introduction: Owns his own business; entrepreneur; he believes in small businesses; when he graduated college he could have joined IBM but he chose a small business because he likes to grow companies and get to know the people; he wants to take care of his helpers. Been a volunteer in a preschool in Lexington. When he was a kid in Argentina he went to all private schools. When his son was in a private school his son didn't understand why they have to help out. That created an impact on his son and everyone in the community. Marketing director of the school; did fundraising events for the school. That's what pushed him to come here. What we are doing here is changing a student's life.

  1. When he was attending meetings in a small business (was not part of the board) but he enjoyed it and understood how it worked. He has an MBA
  2. He is not an expert in charter schools; in Lexington they have the minute man which he understands is a charter school. Certain towns can attend the school; it gives a different perspective than other schools; engineering, food business. This is Spanish immersed which makes him proud and happy.
  3. If he is part of the board, how would you like him to advocate or to help out as part of the board. Does not have a clear answer right now.
  4. That's part of focusing more on people; integration of the people in the school to help the children to grow up as a community; more beliefs and confidence in themselves to change their attitudes. He has experience as a parent because his son has a good friend and he treats everyone in the same way. In Argentina he used to live in a bubble. Here he has a community of friends and they are all different, mostly in Lowell if we talk about low income. In his life, it doesn't make a difference if they don't have an academic education.
  5. He would put his perspective and if it's not the majority he would have to work side by side to achieve the goals of the team.

Closing Remarks: Talking about academics or skills, he has a background in engineering and an MBA in order to help improve the process. On the other side, he can take something from this position if he is chosen, he likes to work a lot, he can be a guide to the school so that would be good learning for him. In the last 10 years, he got a bone marrow transplant. His health insurance didn't cover it. That changed his vision of his life. Since then it changed his personality and work with the people even though managing numbers is easy for him he prefers to work with people. He likes to learn; he also likes this position because it's a good opportunity for him to progress.

D.

Interview: Board of Trustees Candidate Angelica Cortez Silva

Introduction: She is from Chile; nurse/midwife; she's living here in the US since 2012; she moved from Buenos Aires where her kids were born. Her last year she has been developing teams in South America and here. She belongs to a group of women who support each other. She is very caring as a nurse. She loves kids. She loves how they create their own learning systems. She thinks her experience has made her who she is; she is resilient; 10 years ago her family had a hard health moment, so she has a lot of strength to show the kiddos. She is very positive. She likes working with the mindfulness. She can give the board ideas to create the mindfulness and positive mind in order to create good things. She has two kids: one HS and one MS. Both kids are bilingual. She learned English 10 years ago. She lives in Lexington. She likes to live as a community. Every member has something to share and give to others. And this is how we grow.

  1. Nowadays with the past 2 years very hard on the society, she thinks because she is very resilient she can complement her point of view of being a healthy human being because her background is in nursing so for her she sees the human being as a holistic person. Based on that point of view. She doesn't know about the board so she's not sure how she could complement the board.
  2. She knows that it is a system that is supported by the state but it is a mix between public and private; there is a board. She's never been nor have her kids attended charter schools.
  3. She needs to think more about that question. She thinks the most important thing is to apply her experience. Anything that you can do for others is not a waste. We live in a community and we can volunteer; share your gift with others. Advocate through that.
  4. She thinks that the most important is that every kid has to see themselves as a unique person; it's not unfair to hold them to the same standard but it depends on how confident they are; we should evaluate that confidence. It's more about what they know about themselves. she mostly believes that the teachers or the persons who are advocating for the students should create the environment for that kid that is very good so the kid can create a great potential for himself. Same standard but should be personalized because every kid is different. I can have an inflammation in my body and then another but they may be different.
  5. She works with a lot of people and mostly from South America. If she doesn't agree with something but can understand the other's point of view then it's fine. It's democracy. She doesn't think her idea is the only idea that can work. She has some point of view based on her experience and others will do the same.

Closing Remarks: The only way to improve is through an accountability system. Kids only have one experience.
