Unless otherwise stated due to COVID-19 precautions, the meeting will be held on the campus of the school (2115 Oakmere Drive Harvey, LA 70058).

Call the Meeting to Order

Dr. Jahquille Ross called a meeting of the Academic Excellence Committee of Laureate Academy Charter School Board of Directors to order on Wednesday Sep 20, 2023 at 4:50 PM.

Approve Minutes (4.19.23)

Caitlyn Scales made a motion to approve the minutes from Academic Excellence Meeting on 04-19-23.
Claire Heckerman-Whitehead seconded the motion.

The agenda from April was approved. 

The committee VOTED to approve the motion.

II. Student Assessment Data

A.

2023-24 Student Enrollment

There are only 11 open seats right now. 6 in 8th grade. 5 in other grade levels. 5 are currently being processed. Students coming are in with academic challenges. 

B.

Spring 2023 LEAP Data Review

  • 7th graders outperformed the district and the state (ELA). 
  • Performed in the top 25% on the Westbank and top 33% in Jefferson Parish (ELA). 
  • Middle school had high mastery. We needed to push for advance (ELA). 
  • 3rd and 4th graders struggled the most - across content. 
  • Math is a strong concern (lowest content area). 
  • Many scholars fall in the approaching basic category into how do we push them to basic or above. (1 student had advance in Math) 
  • New Social Studies standards for the 23-24 school year. 
  • Saw major gains via our middle school this past year (SS). 
  • Performed in the top 22% on the Westbank and top 50% in the state of Louisiana (SS). 
  • 4th graders outperformed the district and the state in Science Mastery. 
  • Leads have generally taught STEM this past year (in testing grades) and it worked out really well data wise (Science).

Spring 2023 STEP Data

  • COVID has impacted our scholars in early literacy. 
  • Added STEP to 3rd grade and their progress monitoring system. 
  • Interventions - Guided Reading & phonics instruction 
  • Read LIVE - used as intervention for upper elementary grades. 

D.

NWEA MAP BOY Data

  • 2nd grade scholars = large dip due to the change in the test (Reading & Math). 
  • First grade's achievement is ranked in the 52nd percentile for all first graders taking MAP and 6th is in the 46th (Reading). 
  • The school is ranked in the 36th percentile for all schools that have taken MAP (Reading). 
  • First grade's achievement is ranked in the 43rd percentile for all first graders taking MAP, all other grades rank in the 30's. 
  • 6th grade is in the 46th percentile for growth (compared to other 6th graders) - Math.

III. Staffing & Observations

A.

Teacher Vacancies

  • Hired 2 new teachers in the last 2 weeks (K/1 STEM & 6th Math). 
  • 6th grade Math teacher is leaving so we will transition. 
  • 7th grade ELA/SS open - long term sub in position 
  • 8th grade ELA/SS open - long term sub in position
  • 5th grade ELA - covered by social studies, interventionist & IC 
  • 4th/5rh grade Social Studies teacher out 4 weeks 

B.
