Tour Admin Building

Wheeler Kearns architects led the group through the main and upper levels of the Administration Building, answering questions during the tour.  Concern about the safety of the chimneys was discussed, among other things.

Meet Wheeler Kearns Architects

Fabi Yep presented the architects' design concept for the Admin Bldg.  The architects presented two options in lieu of a lula (small elevator) to connect lower and main levels.  One was to keep classes in the same groupings all day so that lower level classroom could be occupied without regard to elevator accessibility plus move the science lab to the main level.  The other was to create walking routes outside of the building to avoid ever using the stairs--all students use the outdoor walkways all the time to go between main and lower levels.

Staff and committee members asked many questions and proposed solutions.  These included:

  1. Concern re ED office within earshot of faculty lounge
  2. Reception area (and receptionist) are the "face of the school", questioned placing reception in a closed office
  3. Questioned health/confidentiality, etc of placing nurse with reception
  4. ELL and intervention will be needed in mid school (2 teachers)
  5. Discussion on appropriateness of leaving building to change classrooms within the same building
  6. Discussion on appropriateness of lockers in the classrooms--disruption to planning, classrooms if items fetched during the day, staff suggested to move all lockers to gym bldg
  7. Proposed covered corridor connecting gym to admin bldg
  8. Ms Yep presented on utility connections and avoidance of damage to two heritage oaks
  9. Wondered if garage could be converted to classroom--answer that not suitable but anything could be done for a price
  10. Need for designated spaces, especially science, for teachers to have their own space
  11. Can large fireplace room be used as a library as well as a classroom/seminar space
