EL Education Overview
J Willer led the discussion on how to get expeditions started. For next year, K-4 is well-positioned to unroll a full expedition. Teachers could benefit from in-person ELed professional development when that becomes available. Some schools have FT help in developing expeditions.
J Willer shared ELed's Mid-Year Review report. There are committees for three main areas: mastery of knowledge, character, and shared leadership.
B.
Science Curriculum
S Said shared a power point presentation on the Amplify science curriculum, highlighting its fit with ELed approach. Discussion ensued regarding teacher support for Amplify, its necessity due to ELed's curriculum not providing adequate science material or assessment, need to meet science standards (NGSS), ability to build into expeditions, pilot programs of Amplify, its adaptability to curricular needs, other ELed schools' use of Amplify and need for supplemental science programming, and more.
C.
Social Studies/History
S Said presented: Illinois is adopting new social studies standards that will include and reach diverse perspectives. EMSA needs to build its social studies program especially for middle school. The committee discussed ELed not teaching enough social studies and the need for a supplementary curriculum. S Said proposed a pilot program in the middle school.
IV. Other Business
A.
Curriculum Adoption Process
J Willer presented the attached proposed curriculum adoption rubric. The committee discussed that this will help build out systems and processes for the future. Under this rubric, a pilot program could be sanctioned.
The funding for new curricula will come from EMSA's ESSER grant.
B.
Staffing as a whole
J Willer discussed the factors that have led to a backlog in services. Truancy levels last year made it difficult to provide services, for one thing. EMSA has added a k-4 special ed teacher in January and the school psychologist is engaged in services.
J Willer reviewed the proposed staff additions for the next two years. M Gibb asked if there was anything that could be done now to help special services delivery and to hire for next year. Paperwork and any backlog seem to be under control, per staff that responded.
Recruiting and working with Judson University was encouraged.
Summer school is in the ESSER budget--transportation would be important.
